Could this script be adapted to force a wallpaper change every time one changes desktops? Thus giving the effect of different wallpaper on each desktop?

Good question!  Can I come back to you on this one? ...   ;)

Any further word on this question?  Or is there another way to achieve the objective of having different wallpaper or background on each different desktop?  And how many desktops (with different wallpaper on each) can one have with LXDE?  And can one (just one) of the desktops have a slide-show of different scenery (wallpapers) running?   I do all this now on my PCL-KDE-3.5 system.

Great link!  Thanks for sharing that.

@ALL:

I've been using LXDE for a good while now (coming up on three years?).  I was able to configure separate wallpapers for my eight desktops with the "Configure Your LXDesktop" option "Set Wallpaper" by unchecking the box to use the same wallpaper on all desktops, then moving to each desktop in turn and selecting a wallpaper for it.  No need for a slideshow hack to simulate it.

I'm not sure how this would work with the script posted by longtom (that is, whether or not this script could be applied to specific desktops separately such that each could be selected to have its own slideshow or a static wallpaper).

Some of you might remember this thread:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,74092.0.html

No?  You don't?  I do ….  ;D

Truth be told I never got it right to have a wallpaper slideshow running on Lxde.

Since Phoenix runs perfectly right now I went back to my Lxde install to fiddle and see what else I can break.  In a moment of weakness I went back to the wallpaper slideshow problem.

I googled again and struck gold in the Mint forum.

So here is how you get a wallpaper slideshow going in PCLinuxLXDE (Mini):

1. You need to create a location where you have all your wallpapers which you want to use.
    In my setup it is /home/longtom/Wallpapers .
2. Open Leafpad in Menu > Editors
3. In leafpad enter the following:

Code: [Select]
#!/bin/bash

DIR=/home/longtom/Wallpapers/
FLOOR=1
RANGE=`ls -1 "$DIR"/*.jpg | wc | awk '// {print $1}'`

number=0

while [ 1 -eq 1 ]; do

   number=$RANDOM
   while [ "$number" -le $FLOOR ]; do
        number=$RANDOM
   done
   let "number %= $RANGE"  # Scales $number down within $RANGE.
   COUNTER=1
   for X in "$DIR"/*.jpg
   do
      if [ $number -eq $COUNTER ]; then
         pcmanfm --set-wallpaper "$X"
      fi
   COUNTER=$(($COUNTER+1))
   done
   COUNTER=1
   sleep 10m
done

You can change the time interval by changing the number in the line:
Code: [Select]
   sleep 10m
As you can see, mine is set to 10 minutes.

This script works only for jpg files as it stands but you can add other formats at will.

Also make sure that you replace longtom in
Code: [Select]
DIR=/home/longtom/Wallpapers
with your home folder's name.

Save your file in your "/home/user" folder.  I chose the name rotator.

In PCmanFM find your file, right click on it, choose "Properties > Permissions" and tick next to "Make the file executable".

Left click on your file and choose "Execute"

There she runs.

You can add this script to your LXDE autostart script.

One more thing.  If you only log out and back in you might suddenly have 2 sessions of this script running.  We don't want that.
In order to make sure our script stops when we log out we add the following line to our ".bashrc" in the /home/user directory:

Code: [Select]
alias lxlogout='killall -9 rotator | exit 0 && lxsession-logout'

That is it.  Test it and enjoy a new scenery on your desktop every so often to make life more colourful.

I'm working on a GUI...

You can follow the status here, but only in German

Hi, Daniel,

Thanks for taking the time to do this!

Initial tests with interval set to 1 minute on my laptop with external monitor in the "above" position show changes the first minute on the external monitor with change after the first at irregular intervals, and no change on the laptop screen itself at all.

I operate eight virtual desktops on both monitors.

I'm also seeing some broken links for graphics in the GUI.  Everything but the Close button shows a broken link.  Am I missing a library or an icons package somewhere?

Thanks Again,
D

Let's see if either of these results in a posted picture?

No?  How about this one?

Ah, success at last!  I can also tell you that I had to rename the folder with underscores to replace spaces.  With the spaces, this folder would cause the GUI to crash and not start back up on succeeding retries.

Thanks for testing  :)

Did you use different wallpaper on each desktop?

Yes, I did.  Each desktop, and each monitor on each desktop has a different wallpaper (16 images in all, for 8 virtual desktops).

Before we get started, I had to Ctrl-Alt-Bksp this morning for something quite unrelated (I accidentally opened a kabillion files on my desktop attempting to transfer them to an external drive - dratted mouse!  :-[ )

I saw a few files listed to which I did not have permissions.
Which files you mean?

Snipped out from my previous posting:

Code: [Select]
find: `/usr/share/icons/crystal-clear/ico': Permission denied
find: `/usr/share/icons/crystal-clear/icns': Permission denied
find: `/usr/share/icons/crystal-gt/apps': Permission denied

Something else I noticed while putting this together:  I was on another desktop (desktop 8 ) briefly, and while I was there, it's upper monitor wallpaper was changed (presumably by lxrotator?).  Does this mean lxrotator is only acting on a desktop while its active (in view)?

lxrotator in this version will only support one desktop, and so it can't convert the wallpaper for one desktop. So will not display the current wallpaper in the gui...

This output find: `/usr/share/icons/crystal-clear/ico': Permission denied i get always, too. that's no problem for the icons for the buttons.

Revoluz works on a app, based only on yad, so there will display the icons for the buttons, i think...

Understood that this is why the current wallpaper being applied is not displayed in the GUI.  Not a huge deal, but a finding worth reporting.

Understood that this permissions issue is not a problem for display of buttons in the GUI.

I'm not so clear on this one.  What is Revoluz?  (Didn't find a package of that name in Synaptic)  I see yad is yet another dialog maker?  This was used to construct the GUI?

Thanks for working this, even for wise guys like me who have two monitors in play.
