EFI and GPT go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Should it matter (GPT or DOS)? grub2 understands both and does find kernels and loaders.

Of course, an installer will be working in the environment it's just installed, which should always match its own OS.
You have a point there but this defeats the purpose of chroot'ing which (in my case: not a first-time install) would provide the necessary environment for bootloader restoration.

Is there a method other than grub2-instrall to achieve this? (Booting from a 'rescue' live system, adding a missing bootloader for a system running another kernel version)

Go ahead and mix sauerkraut and honey. You can still eat it.  ::)

o For msdos disk, always install in bios-legacy.
o For gpt disk, always install in UEFI.

I converted all of my drives to gpt format after I acquired the UEFI motherboard. I can say I have never experienced a draklive install failure.

Instruction noted.  Will try again what I was doing with GPT format (that's how I started, by the way) and - given some time - will follow what grub2-install is doing to end up in the ditch.  One way or another the system(s) are running fine!

..... for legacy booting with msdos disk, Grub2 will install to MBR, and be quite happy.

I certainly agree that GPT label is the better option, including a bios_grub and ESP partition, to allow legacy or EFI booting of the OS at will.
