trading charts not updating
« on: November 23, 2011, 04:10:19 AM »
Hi,
I'm hoping someone on this forum may be able to help.
A friend of mine uses a broker 's online software to track market trend every minute.

A few months ago her PC was severely infected by little nasties, so I Installed PCLINUXOS 2011 onto her desktop and using firefox
a her browser it all went well -with the risk she was experiencing with Windoze.

In the past 2 weeks the Broker she is with changed the software and since then Linux will not display the charts correctly.

In windows -on Firefox, the chart updates correctly -including the "candlestick" bar graphs -but in Linux the numbers on the right hand side
update but the display does not change within the chart.

We updated Firefox also flash -but to no avail.

The broker who uses this software has been of no help.

This is their response:

Unfortunately we do not provide technical support for Linux operating systems. Our platform and charts, whilst compatible using most browsers, are not compatible with Linux. Given the many different versions and setups of Linux systems, it is not possible for us to provide support for this.

My only suggestion would be to try reverting back to a previous version of Flash, to see if this is perhaps compatible.

Obviously there is something inherent within Microsoft that will activate the movement of the charts -something that perhaps needs to be downloaded in synaptic?

The chart has to move in real time -it only changes when logging off then on.

I tried Iron and Konquerer -same result.

I'd really appreciate any ideas.
cheers

Hi kimwally,

A good answer could be something like:

Dear Broker,
unfortunately we have to change broker because of lack of techical support for Linux ...
  :D ;D

You can test this by running an older LiveCD say KDE-2011-06 ...

Additionally you could try to play with a few variables, like "browser identity", fooling the server to believe this is IE, or playing with other attributes, like HW acceleration, both on firefox and on flash plugin (right click on the flash video and turn HW acceleration off)

Not much info to provide something more than a guess ... good luck!

Did you upgrade the whole system, or just Firefox and Flash?

Tahnks for your reply, I have to go back to my friend soon to try again to fix this problem, the PClinuxos install is only a few months fresh -so I updated firefox and flash only. :)

That'll be the problem. Linux is highly interdependent and everything must be upgraded together to stay in step. This should be done fortnightly for pclos to reduce the chance of problems.

If it is several months since the last upgrade it might be too late to upgrade. In particular you will need to take heed of http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,94949.0.html to upgrade the package management system before upgrading the rest of the system. A reboot will be needed.

There is no guarantee it will work after such a long time. If it doesn't you will need to back up and re-install from the latest ISO.

As it is a friend's machine, you will either need to visit regularly in order to upgrade, or set it up to upgrade automatically at a time you know it will never be switched off until the process has had plenty of time to complete. (There is not currently a lock on the process which will prevent the machine being shut down during upgrading and that would be almost certain to destroy the OS.)

Alternatively, never upgrade at all and just re-install periodically to stay reasonably current. However, that has security implications, especially if financial transactions are involved, as there will be no security updates.

Is it a big online broker? Because many of them have programs that run on things like java that run great in Linux. I found the one provided by my broker to have tones of bugs on Windows, but runs amazing on Linux.  ;D

Yeah, I got the same biz from Ameritrade, but I got everything working finally. No way i'm logging onto my broker's site using windoze, secure connections notwithstanding.

Still waiting for some good charting/scanning software for linux, i need a lot of configuration options for custom scans.
This aggression will not stand man.
