[SOLVED] Java Run Time error when trying to run Open Office
« on: November 20, 2011, 11:36:36 AM »
Hi All,
I'm getting that infamous "JRE" error message (not the exact wording but something to the effect of "JRE - Java Run Time Error, you need to select an updated version of Java...) when trying to run Open Office.

The problem is Open Office will not open so I cannot simply follow the instructions to correct this problem (I think Tex has posted this simple solution more times than he cares to).

I did open Synaptic (with a Reload of course) and did a search for Java.
However as far as I can tell I have the latest version of Java already installed.

Should I remove and then reinstall Java or am I simply just ahead of the release of a newer version?
I am hoping all I have to do is sit tight for a short while and then update via Synaptic.
If this isn't the case and I do have to take some extra steps to resolve this issue then I would greatly appreciate it is someone could kindly assist me.

Many thanks in advance for your kind help.

We don't use OpenOffice but LibreOffice... If You have installed OpenOffice then it's either OLD or out of repositories...

You can check that Open (or Libre) Office is "seeing" Java by going to

Tools > Options > *Office > Java

and Java should show - check that the "radio button" is ticked and restart *Office.

My LibreOffice is showing 1.6.0_29
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

Actually I can't.
Open Office never opens.
It gives me an error message when I try to run it and then hangs/crashes.

Many thanks AdrzejL, that did the trick, LibreOffice seems to be working just fine!
