How do I make Firefox my default browser? (SOLVED)
« on: November 18, 2011, 03:07:55 PM »
Since upgrading to Ff 8 I have to reset it as default browser every time I open it.  The Ff help suggests I need to do this with the system file associations, but doesn't explain how to do this with LXDE.

How does one become a hero?  By asking a lot of dumb questions apparently! I have three computers of various ages, the most powerful is a Dell Netbook 10v; each has 2 or 3 versions of PCLOS of various vintages.  Location, St John's, Newfoundland.

Thinking this will help

Firefox -> Edit-> Preferences -> Advanced -> General -> Set Firefox as default browser.

EDIT:
Fix path, sorry my mistake  :-\

Thanks guys, but I cannot find exactly your suggested paths.

Neal I can find: lxdecc > Personal tab > Set Preferred Applications. and that sort of works but it seems to be overwritten by thunderbird somehow.  I.e. When I open Firefox it is the default, but when I connect to it from an address in Tb it is no longer the default.

Leiche: your path does not exist in my installation of Firefox 8.

Firefox -> Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> General ->

Does not have the option "Set Firefox as default browser.", only "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup"

Whatever I do I don't seem to get a permanent solution.  N.B. this has only happened since upgrading to 8.0.

What has worked for me is this:  There is a checkbox that says something to do with "make this check everytime on start up"   I think the default text in that window says "it is not your default browser"  If you uncheck that box, you wont see it again.
If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it!  If ya cain't fix it, ya gotta stand it.  If ya cain't stand it..............Visit the forum and search.

Howard,
Thunderbird is a separate issue. You can set it as default in the same place as you set your browser in lxdecc. These may help:

I seem to have it sorted out now with the lxdrcc setting and leaving the "always check ..." box in preferences unchecked, it's been OK for several days.  Thanks everyone.

I've recently updated to FF 9.0 without any problems, so it's not a problem with every update, or someone has fixed it.
