[Solved] OOPS!!! Can't log in Kde/LXDE
« on: November 18, 2011, 05:40:19 AM »
I run PCLOS KDE and everything works fine.
I have it set up to auto login as I'm the only one using this computer.

I thought I would try the LXDE desktop after having read about it.
So I chose the required packages from synaptic and downloaded/installed them.
I logged out, chose the LXDE enviroment and entered my usual user name and password. But it is not recognised.
So I shut down and rebooted and now I reach the LXDE login screen and no matter what DE I choose, it won't recognise my password and or user name.
I'm typing this from the live cd.
Help! How do I get back to my old KDE desktop without a full re-install.

Acer Aspire SA60, Intel Celeron 2.8ghz, 2gig ram, 1x80gig (xp), 1x80gig (PCLinuxOs) & 1x100gig (Storage) hard drives,Nvidia FX5700 graphic card, 22" lcd monitor @ 1680x1050res. Running dual boot Win XP and PCLinuxOS KDE on separate drives.
Even for this rig, performance is good and all 3d works

So I chose the required packages from synaptic and downloaded/installed them.

Just a bit of clarification please - when you say you chose the required packages, are you referring to task-lxde? or another method?

In synaptic I chose 'sections' Graphical Desktop/LXDE and applied the packages chosen with lxde-common.
However, after 2 reboots I have been able to log into KDE with my normal username and password.
I just don't understand why it does not accept the same for LXDE. I also tried user / user and root / root, but they didn't work either.
So I plan to un-install these packages now I'm back to my normal desktop.
I may just try a live cd later as I really wanted to see what lxde is like.

Can I possibly suggest that if you want to try a different desktop in the future (be it gnome, lxde, xfce etc) that you use the task-desktopname method as that does all the grunt work installing all the necessary packages for you.

Alternatively, you could download the lxde ISO and run it in Virtualbox - that way you have your "original" desktop and a VM of lxde. Best of both worlds.

Thanks for the reply,
I wasn't aware of the task_*** section before.
So I may give it another try this way.

I have followed the task install and can happily report I now have the choice of lxde / KDE.
Lxde is running fine and recognises my login name and password.
So thanks for the info.
+1
Will mark this topic as solved.
