How to get Desktop to show files [SOLVED]
« on: November 14, 2011, 04:47:00 PM »
i forgot to do aptupgrade on my own compu so by the time i got around to doing it the upgrade seems to have left my Desktop without any of the files that it had on it, as well as the Trashcan icon.

i finally got my Taskbar set up again, but can't figure out how to get the files to show up.  When i check on their existence with Krusader, i see them listed under the folder Desktop, but the KDE Plasma Desktop won't show them.

When i rightclick and choose Desktop Settings, i only see two icons on the left:  View and Mouse Actions.  On a friend's computer it has several more.

Any ideas?

Have a great afternoon!  :)

Unlock Widgets
Right click on the desktop>desktop settings
then change Layout from desktop to folder view
then click apply then OK

Thanks, Ramchu, but all i have, after unlocking widgets, is the same as before, just:  Desktop, Newpaper and Search and Launch.

Have a great evening!  :)

Just clarifying Ramchu's message:

Right click on desktop > Desktop Settings > Unlock Widgets > choose "Folder View' > Apply > OK
 Right click > Lock Widgets

The items must be in the "Desktop" folder in your home directory to display on desktop.

Any luck?

You mean to say you do not have Folder View available on your Desktop Layout?

Reinstall kde4-config
This will reset your desktop to original default settings and you will have to tweak it to your liking from there.

But before you try Ramchu's advice (I hope it's not too late), you can try reinstalling kdebase4-plasma and/or kdeplasma-addons (?)

Thanks, guys.  Well i first did the kde4-config and started tweaking.  Then i saw the kdebase4* and d/l it.  That pretty much did the trick.  It's pretty strange.  i've had to reinstall several programs.

One of the programs i can't find and need is Ark.  i can't locate it in Synaptic, either.  Arg.

Thanks again and have a great evening!  :)

That should be kdeutils4-ark.
