FFmpeg - Security update not happening.
« on: November 14, 2011, 11:25:27 AM »
I have ffmpeg installed, and have read Texstar's Software announcement 11 November 2011,Security update: ffmpeg
As yet the new security update has not installed via Synaptic.

I'm worried being the 15th November that I've not received the update, especially due to security issues involved.

Is it possible that the Repo I use is still not synched after this amount of time?
http://debian.ethz.ch/mirror/pclinuxos/apt/
It is generally very quick to synch.

I've also tried http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/ as it is one of the quickest repositories.

I note Topic: (Update) FFmpeg by djohnston initially requesting the security package suggestion, dated 09 November 2011, due to security issues.

FFmpeg is a free tool and library collection used to record, convert and stream audio and video files in various formats. It is used by several popular open source software projects including the VLC Media Player, MPlayer, Perian and others.

According to the announcement,

"November 4, 2011

We have made 2 new point releases (0.7.7 and 0.8.6) that fix around 90 bugs, several of which are security relevant. We recommend users, distributors and system integrators to upgrade unless they use current git master."

0.7.7 bzipped source tarball available here.
0.7.7 gzipped source tarball available here.

0.8.6 bzipped source tarball available here.
0.8.6 gzipped source tarball available here.

1.)Advice that I'm worrying prematurely, update will be in Repo "soon" ?

2.)I should 'manuallyupdate' from djohnston's thread .

3.) I'm actually not sure, to be honest how to manually update.

4.)I have concerns that editing the presets in '.winff/presets.xml' has something to do with NOT receiving the ffmpeg update ?

Do the work on the file you edited previously  .....

/home/<YourUserName>/.winff/presets.xml.

This will change the file only for the user and not system-wide, so you will not meet with any file permission problems.

There  should be no need to delete anything .....  rename the existing presets file .....  copy the new on into the same location and name it 'presets.xml' then launch WinFF and test.

All of the above being done  in  /home/<YourUserName>/.winff/

regards.

Advice greatly appreciated,

francis

No worries Just18, just checking every option  ;)
I have version 0.7.7-1 installed. (Says latest available version - Synaptic, Properties, ffmpeg)
I don't get the expression, 0.7.7 is latest version, without adding 0.7.7-1

Obsoletes ffmpeg (<0.7.7)
That confuses me, actually fact that no one has said 0.7.7-1 with the further version identifier "-1" is confusing.

I have no 'history' log of it being installed in either Oct, or November.

However, If that's latest version, it's the latest version.

Just trying to clear up if I have mysteriously installed latest version  ???

Thankyou for your help guy's, confirmation I can lay this to rest would be great.
