(solved) XFE instead of Pcmanfm?
« on: November 13, 2011, 04:51:43 PM »
Hi, crazy question, is there any way to run LXDE with Xfe instead of Pcmanfm? As in delete Pcmanfm from the system?  I see that you have to delete lxde-common with it. Is lxde-common needed to run LXDE?

Thanks -John

John,
Both lxde-common and PCManFM are needed. Install and use xfe, if you want.

I believe that PCManFM controls the desktop, which Xfe can't do!
PCLinuxOS has no wealthy sponsors and can only survive with your donations! Don't wait it might be too late.

It enables icons etc on the desktop. Explorer in Windows, Nautilus in Gnome, does the same. Only in this case it does a basic job with little overhead.

PCManFM also mounts and unmounts volumes onb the fly, with XFE you would need a separate daemon to do this and then configure it correctly to do so, this is one of the reasons I did not use XFE in -light

No reason you can't use both, is there?

No, I can. It's just like I will have to leve in LXterm while I have Guake as the main term. I just haven't had the time to figured out how to edit the menu system yet and what file I need to edit to make some apps the "main" apps. While I am at it, I need to figure out how to edit the panel at the bottom of the screen so that Firefox no longer shows up in it..............

Rather than go into explanations of all of that, I will tell you that there was an issue of PCLinuxOS Magazine that you should read. ;D Use the forum's search function to find it, or you can go the the mag site and look for it there. You'll find it is full of helpful articles.
Research is good for the student, John. ;)

One thing that is new since the publication of that issue of the magazine is the Personal tab and the options under it in the LXDE Control Center - lxdecc - Configure Your LXDesktop in the menu. Look them over. :)

Sorry I never got back to you guys about this. Someone sent me the link to that article and I forgot to thank them......I'm a scatter brain.........any way, that is a GREAT article! WOW, LXDE should link to it. Better yet, just load a copy of it with Foxit in the next distro.

Once again, thanks to all of you putting up with my questions. -John
