(Solved)PCLinoxOS Kde 2011-09 LiveUSB LibreOffice doesn't work
« on: November 11, 2011, 06:36:33 PM »
Hi everyone.

I upgraded yesterday from PCLinox Kde 2009 LiveUSB (which worked great) to PCLinox Kde 2011-09 LiveUSB.

The distro is installed on a new 8Gb memory stick which I use on my Dell Latitude D530 (dual core 120 Mhz I think) laptop. Everything works well (after I loaded Pulse Audio) except I  can't access any of my Microsoft office files (like Word, Excel, Powerpoint ect)

When I go to Office and then click on LibreOffice I get the following message:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to LibreOffice Manager!

Please run this program after the live session has been installed to the harddisk of               your computer.

Exiting...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is there a way of getting LibreOffice to work with LiveUSB?

If not is there a compatible version of OpenOffice I can download? The Openoffice version in the 2009 distro worked great.

Are there other options?

Hi John_nf1,
Do you have Libre Office installed on your USB stick?
The link you are clicking under the Office menu tab is the LO manager whose function is to install Libre office. I don't think it will install to a live USB, but if you install LO to the install that originated your live USB, you can generate a live USB with LO.
As far as I know, at least.

+1,

There exists limitations due to LiveUSB structure.
Alternatively you could perform a plain installation of PCLinuxOS on the USB stick, there you will be able to install LO.

Has anyone installed LO to a LiveUSB in persistence mode? ........  just wondering if it would work ..... never tried it myself ...

I remember to have tried that, (there was a thread about that, but can't find it right now):
LO installation has been reported successfully when using large amount of RAM (i.e. 4 GB), installation failed on system with lower amount of RAM.

That's because of limitations introduced by unionfs when layering root filesystem (which lives in RAM) and persistence filesystem on USB.

I saw a post, today, that "suggest" that the script has been changed now, to prevent installation on liveUSB.

Ah yes!  Another 'senior moment' of mine.

I now recall that thread about the required RAM.

Thanks Johnmart. I downloaded PCLO KDE from the website http://www.pclinuxos.com/. After downloading it to my harddrive I created a LiveCD. From the LiveCD I used the Create LiveUSB option to load a live version onto my memory stick.

It was my understanding that LO is bundled in the suite of programs that comes with PCLO. Is that correct? If it is it seems that LO didn't install on the USB, but it would if I installed PCLO onto the laptops hard drive. Does that make sense?

No, if the LibreOffice suite was installed, it would no longer be CD-sized and would have to be burned on a DVD. That's the reason the LibreOffice Manager is included on the live CD.

That makes sense to me As. LO seems to have a lot of capability. To work on a memory stick could be be problematic. I unfortunately can't load PCLO directly on my laptop hard drive. What other options do I have? Can I copy the PCLO 2009 LiveUSB OO (Open Office) over? Is that version of OO compatible with PCLO 2011-09?

Plain installation on USB stick, like a conventional hard disk (as opposed to LiveUSB system), once you have installed and booted from USB installation, run lomanager to install LO.  (of course you will need a larger USB stick).

Its on a 8 Gig stick now. What size of stick would I need to comfortably work with LO?

KDE at installation will use approx 3 GB, LO will use approx 1 GB, the remaining will be for your files  ;)

I just tested the installation of LO on a LiveUSB .....  admittedly using the 64bit test ISO and its repo (LO is in that repo) ....  ans using Persistence mode.

LO installed correctly and was there after a reboot.
I did not test it much .....  just crested a test text file, saved it, closed LO and then clicked on the file which automatically launched LO again with the text file open.

So it appears if you can get it installed it will work.

Yes, with all the updates and LO installed (about 650 MBs), the liveUSB did appear to be a bit slower.

One thing to notice is that changes to the display settings were not retained between boots ....  and neither were the changes to fstab - I was mounting a LAN share.

I am unsure if there are any boot options which might allow those items to be retained between boots.

That would be very strange, and it should means that some severe flaw exist in unionfs.

About display settings, I'm thinking that xorg.conf is rebuilt at each Xserver start, I remember some thread about that, and a solution ... post #7 from Texstar:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,94417.0.html

Do not have any explanation about /etc/fstab ...  ???  Will try to perform some test ASAP ;)

Locking the file

/union/etc/X11/xorg.conf

will maintain the settings during reboots.

I think the fstab file is written at each boot also.

Not surprising that those two are written at boot .....  it is the desirable behaviour when booting in different hardware.

It seems that the persistence settings do not override them.
