Installing LXDE (Solved problem)
« on: November 11, 2011, 01:13:36 PM »
I went thru this before, and searched for the answer, but can't seem to find it.
I remember as soon as I got to the log on point using a command and unloading laptop mode and some other things to free up memory so I could get LXDE to start/install.

What's happening is I start LXDE from the livecd and in like 5 hours or so I seen a desktop once. Usually it hangs at the wallpaper.

Yep, checked md5sum, it's correct.

burnt two copies of LXDE one at 8x where I know it will work and another at 1x.

Thanks all!

Ancient Celeron 600 laptop, 128 meg memory. This is the same laptop that died around Xmas last year. I finally drug it out of the bag and spliced the power supply back together so I had a computer. Since it sat for so long the CMOS battery died and last week the hard drive croaked. So I took the drive out of the Dell that's supposed to replace this computer and put XP on it. Trying to get Linux back on and either dual boot or take XP off and just have Linux on it.

With so low specs, it might be better to try LXDE-Mini.

Well, I did get LXDE full on in 2010 when it came out, and I did download mini this time as I figured I had enough experience with the full versoin to set up the mini version to what I wanted and not have a bunch of extra stuff that I didn't use..

Sad part is the cd I installed from in 2010 would not even boot, and looking at it there are no scratches and it's clean as a whistle.. Give you an idea of what a pile of junk this old thing is...

Thanks all

Hardware problem is what it sounds like.

But I've had it (Linux) on it before, and XP installed perfectly. The cd-rom's not the fastest tool in the shed and sometimes you have to push the ribbon cable in to make it work.

Just need the keys to drop the 'GDM? (log on screen) and then which services I disabled, I remember laptop mode being one, then how to get the screen back up..

The log in info?
The liveCD boot straight to the desktop. The log in info is right in front of you. If you do not boot to the desktop or do not see the log in info, something is definitely wrong. Either you have a bad download, or you did not download an official ISO.

Downloaded from ftp.ch.debian.org -- on the page as a alt site.

At the log in screen, where you put in guest as user/password. There's a command to drop the log in screen and edit services to load. Had to do this before because of low memory (128 meg). If memory serves, laptop mode and iptables?

Honestly don't think I dreamed this up, swear I had to do this on either 2010 or version before it.

TKS!

When the desktop has loaded, open Menu > More Applications > Configuration > Configure Your Computer >>> System > Manage system services >>> click the info button beside each service before you disable it. You will want to choose carefully which services you disable. iptables is not on by default.
After you have everything set as you want, install.

As a possible alternative, download and install PCLinuxOS-Iced-Latte:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,95726.0.html

It uses IceWM, an easy to use light window manager. Once you have it installed, update fully and install task-lxde after that.

Might try that, I thought of openbox and building from there.. Version before 2010 I had problems with, 2010 had to boot a few times for it to install.

I'll let u know.

Also you had it running before - I think 128meg Ram is very thin indeed.  I am really surprised you got the 2010 version running on this.  If you coulkd stock up on ram life would be a lot easier for you I reckon.

Extremely thin, but remember it was made to run Win 98... If I remember I think the best it can do is it has 64 meg meg internal, and only one slot, and I think it will only take 128 meg (no bigger) in that slot.

I've given thought to just waiting till someone comes up with a power supply of the better dell I have, and if you seen this poor thing, I have the L shaped connector pointed down to get power to it, CMOS battery is dead so everytime I fire it up I have to set time/date, and I have the power supply between the brick and computer taped together... Its a mess...

Openbox installed, so somehow I must have got a brick from the ftp site. I did like the install APClinuxOS from the boot screen, but auto config didn't work... Oh well.. I still need to get wireless working, and that was the one thing I liked abt LXDE, everything worked out of the ISO...
