How can I increase the brightness?

Hello,

OpenBox lower the brightness after boot to an uncomfortable level. I installed gnome-power-manager I modified the file myuser/.config/openbox/autostart.sh this these 2 lines:

gnome-power-manager &
sleep 1

I got this information in here: http://pclosmag.com/html/Issues/201110/page05.html

But nothing, I hit the brightness buttons (F2 and F3 in my laptop) I saw an intensity bar moving up and down but brightness do not change. I spent days to get here, I installed a Win 7 VM inside an encrypted OpenBox for my special programs but no brightness control. I do not see any applet rather than the sound applet, how can I get them.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Hi,

Have you done a research with the keyword "brightness" at the laptop hardware section of the forum ? I just looked and found plenty threads about the topic. ie: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,95096.msg811013.html#msg811013

My laptop is an old Nec, and I need to ajust it at each new session, with the keys "Fn+F8".

1.- I included in  /boot/grub/menu.lst   the following at the end of the line:
acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor

It increased brightness to 100%, about 40 or 50% more. But the sliding control disappeared from the GNOME Power Manager - AC Preferences,  so I was not able to fine adjust the brightness, please see:

2.- I eliminated from  /boot/grub/menu.lst
acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor

Now the sliding control appeared at full 100% brightness, but the real brightness is about 50% no matter where I move the control, I do not understand this behavior, so no luck after hours investigating. I have spent various days with little sleep trying to configure my laptop, I am going to sleep tonight, I hope so.

I appreciate a lot if somebody can help me because I invested countless of hours investigating, I begin to lose hope in having a linux machine working, is becoming to long and stressful process. I guess I am almost done, but I need to see my screen well because I need to set up a lot of programs and  my email accounts in PClinuxOS machine, webmail access is time consuming.

3.- I discovered gconf-editor so I think I can set the brightness to an appropriated value using the gconf-editor with root, if I have the parameters: acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor in menu.lst but if this works it will not be ideal, because at night I should change the brightness again.

Hi joejac,

I am sorry I can't investigate more for you. The link I gave you is an example, there is much more to read on the forum. Please try the Search section, and come back once you will have tested several solutions.

As I told you my laptop has a "Fn" button which, pressed along with other blue keys provide different effects, one being ajusting the brightness.

Yesterday I was more rested and I used gconf-editor to set a fixed brightness to 80% until I can have or the applet or the Fn+F2/F3 keys working. Other Fn keys works but not these ones.
I did my search not only in this forum but also on Google, and in this link the recommendation of omskates is to wait until Kernel 3

Coming from Windows there is a lot of things to learn and understand with Linux.
