NVidia Problems - [ Resolved ]
« on: November 02, 2011, 05:50:46 PM »
 ‎Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad  CPU   Q9450  @ 2.66GHz
4GB RAM
Nvidia Graphics card ... GTX 550 Ti
2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs   and   2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs

The card is not being correctly recognised by the OS .....  it is enumerated in Hardware as

Code: [Select]
Device 1244
‎VGA compatible controller
Module: ‎Card:NVIDIA cards not working with nv

and LSPCI shows

Code: [Select]
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 1244 (rev a1)
I am presently booted into the pclos3.bfs  kernel ......  after a couple of hours trying both kernels.

I have tried all the available drivers from Nvidia, nouveau, nv etc etc

When PCC is launched the highlighted driver is always   vesa

If chosen it will boot into vesa ......  else it goes to a log in screen if any other driver is selected.

Errors when attempting to startx or kde are along the lines of

Code: [Select]
Could not open the device file  /dev/nvidia0
Failed to initialise the NVidia GPU @ PCI: 1.0.0

I have uninstalled every NVidia package and reinstalled a couple of time.

I even copied the xorg.conf file from the 64 bit OS to see if that might help .....  nope  :(

Presently I believe it is using the 280 Nvidia driver ....  screen res and KDE effects are working as normal.

My first question is .....  is there anywhere I can get the PCLOS package for the 285 driver? ......  maybe despite the problems it caused for other users it might solve mine.

I have, out of desperation, installed the 64 bit test OS on a small partition on this same hardware.
The graphics card is correctly recognised and all has been fine over many boots.

I am stumped .......  just don't know what else I can try except another driver.

Any help really appreciated .......  this is my main PC with all my data on various partitions.

Thanks for reading  ;)

regards

Have you tried using XFdrake at the login screen as Root ?

On one of the computers I have, I had a similar problem as yours and XFdrake was the solution

64bit here:
http://repo.pclinuxos.su/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2011/RPMS.x86_64/

 ;)

Can it be used on the 32 bit install?

No, absolutely not. Only in 64bit.

Eventually you can try the nvidia binary, usually discouraged in PCLinuxOS:

The 285.05..09 driver is in the repos, I'm using it now. I have the same type of card as you, when I use my backup, I have to run nvidia-xorg in a terminal as root to get the driver running.

I have, as mentioned, successfully used the 285 on 64 bit test OS.

So I was looking for the 'pulled' PCLOS package of the 285 for 32 bit.

Thanks for the link .....  I may have to try it.

Before I do ....  would the present 280 & DKMS need to be uninstalled?

Thanks.

I would suggest to remove it, I think that the installation binary will remove it (or it's components) anyway, only not in the proper way.

Yeah .....  had been thinking about removing any of the Nvidia DKMS modules and associated drivers before running it.

Seems from the info on the site that it does support this card .......  which it seems to do in the 64 bit OS.

OK will give it a go as I cannot seem to find the 285 package that was pulled from the repo.

Thanks.

A very odd time it would boot using the correct driver ......  most often not .....  with the 280 installed.

I am now using the 285 and have rebooted and also shut down and waited a little before turning on the power again and booting up.

Both times all OK ......  we'll see how it goes in the long term.

The card is still not being enumerated correctly though ...  presumably this is handled by some other listing that is not updated ......

Code: [Select]
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 1244 (rev a1)
Nevertheless I will now mark this as solved.

Thanks all for the help  ;)

regards.

Sorry there Just18, :-[ my bad, I have the 285 driver install but that was before it was removed from the repo. ;) I didn't go back to the 280 driver because this driver was and is working good for me.

NP ......  that was what I thought it was, but was in foul mood last night so may have come across a bit sharp ....  if so, sorry.  ;)

The machine booted up fine again this morning, so hopefully it will stay working.

I have a fear it may be something else, although with the 64 bit test OS working correctly, I guess I should relax  :D

Hi all,
I am back again on this thread .........  one thing I forgot to check was how to uninstall - correctly - the native driver.
I have not found anything on the download page about uninstalling ........

As the 290.10 is now in the repo it would be my intention to change to the repo version.

Which all a roundabout way of asking .......  do I need to specifically uninstall this driver ....  or can I install 'over it' from the repo?

thanks

EDIT:
All done it seems ......  and the new driver in the repo is behaving itself!
I located nvidia-uninstall in /usr/bin to get rid of the native driver and then installed the new one from the repo. It did take a couple of reboots and set-ups to get it working.

All good so far.
