USB 3 Port Not recognized (SOLVED)
« on: October 28, 2011, 06:09:11 PM »
Just installed a Multimedia drive internally that has 4 usb3 ports and card reader. USB gets installed to PCIe slot and card reader to usb on motherboard. PCC sees device, and card reader works fine but not the usb. It works fine in windows so I know it is installed properly. If I install anyone of 3 flash drives it does not get seen in device notifier. I have tried changing settings there to mount any removable device without any success. Any suggestions?

Is the xhci-hcd driver loaded?

If not then try loading it to see if things change

Use this to see if it is loaded

Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep hci

It should return amongst others

Code: [Select]
xhci_hcd

If not then load it using

Code: [Select]
modprobe xhci-hcd

and do some testing

If it is needed to be permanently loaded   xhci-hcd  can be added to the   /etc/modprobe.preload   file

what kernel are you using? you can know by opening up the terminal and type "uname -r"

The first thing to do when a new piece of hardware doesnt work is to update the kernel to the latest version you can find.
.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

Hi Duvid,

the info you posted show that:
a) there is a USB 3.0 host controller
b) there is a USB 2.0 hub connected to.

May the this multimedia drive use USB 3.0, and as accessory provide a USB 2.0 hub with the 3 additional ports ?
Can you post a link about this device ?

The device notifier could be an issue for itself, you could try to plug in a flash drive and the type the command dmesg in one terminal, you should be able to see if the device is recognized or not.

@Just18,
the module appear to be in use, if not, I could not see how the (subdevice) usb hub could have been recognized.

@muungwana,
the kernel is 2.6.38.8-pclos3

I am using the latest kernel, don't have any usb3 devices at present to test with ( was looking at card readers mainly) but this was a bonus going down the road. I enclosed a link of the model, although I bought this at geeks.com , they dont seem to have any more to post so I found another site  with specs. After manually installing xhci-hcd flash drive does not work

I'm thinking that should be a new qualifying question? DE? Hardware? 64bit or 32?

I had been in 32 bit with this problem, must have rebooted into 64 bit,  but the results were all the same. Everything was loading at boot, showed up in PCC the same way, and appears to have same output in terminal.

If I install anyone of 3 flash drives it does not get seen in device notifier.

Are any of these USB 3 devices?  Can you give details of the devices you are inserting please.

What additional messages do you get immediately after plugging in a device? ........  monitor the last lines from   dmesg   to see what is reported when a device is inserted.

Sorry for the mix up yesterday  of my production and testing machine. i ran all the terminal commands suggested, added the entry into modprobe.preload and wound still dont have a working device. Below is the output of dmesg which Does see the device.Still would appreciate any help.

dmesg
Linux version 2.6.38.8-pclos2.bfs (root@thenudiebar) (gcc version 4.5.2 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 8 02:57:34 CDT 2011

the latest PCLOS kernel is 2.6.38.8-pclos3, however this should not be a problem.

I plugged in a flash drive and a WD Passport as suggestedn neither of which are being recognized. I don't always use the latest kernel automatically unless I run into a problem or might be a difference maker. below is demesg with the output from  plugging in the usb devices, neither are usb3.
