Just as an update....I'm running the pae.bfs kernel.  About five minutes ago, I had to leave the office, so I closed the lid and the system went into sleep mode.  RadioTray was also playing.

when I came back, I opened the lid and expected to see the screen lock routine pop up.  I would enter my password, unlock, and go about my business. Earlier, this worked jut as described.

This time, I opened the lid to a black screen. RadioTray was still playing. No box came up for me to enter my password.  Nothing.  Blank.
I tried Ctrl Alt Backspace.  No go.  So, I issued REISUB.

I then rebooted using the pae.bfs kernel once more.  Blank screen.  No mouse icon activity, no KDE log-in screen.  Just a blank screen.

I issued REISUB once more, then booted using kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs.

I'm back up.

Did the pae.bfs kernel cuase the problem or is this some bug in the sleep mode routine?

EDIT -- Just to double check, I restarted and booted the pae.bfs kernel.  I'm up and running with the 2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs kernel.
Hmmmmm....

you could try the pae kernel and compare results

i disabled the sleep functions on my netbook to avoid this class of problems, all it does is when i close the lid the screen is disabled, nothing more, this way i avoid other problems
