Cracking of sound through speakers

I currently have PCLinuxOS 2011 installed WITH Windows XP. I have a dual boot and love it, but after I left PCLinuxOS 2010, my sound cracks each time the OS loads OR any sound is being loaded from a webpage, game and etc.

What causes this? I had no problems with 2010. Any ideas folks?

I have other issues as well but they are nothing compared to this absolute pain. My ears are getting very unhappy about this version of PCLinuxOS.

................have you tried a different set of speakers or earphones to verify it is PCLOS?

......and what version PCLOS are you talking about?

There are sound settings, but it is advised not to fool with those quite yet.....

Also....DUST is a big culprit with computers and equipment....if your speakers have a volume control knob - try to use a small amount of compressed air in and around the knob...there are also various electronic cleaner sprays available online or locally...

...also make sure your speaker {normally green color} plug is clean and all the way "in"....with no breaks/kinks in the wires....

Heh, I WISH it was dust. I'm using PCLinuxOS KDE 2011. I have an HP ze4900 laptop. When I used PCLinuxOS 2010 this was not an issue. I'm wondering exactly what the problem could be. It only cracks when sound is going to be played and then cracks AFTER a sound is finished playing. Same for CD music; when it first opens ANY sound program and is loading a track it will crack loud and then the track will play. After the track is finished, the speakers crack again.

It IS PCLinuxOS 2011. It's sad, but I LOVE 2011 very much. I guess this is a minor problem but wish it would stop.

Are you using just ALSA or pulseaudio? What programs produce the crackling sound? Is this happening from running wine programs? What chipset is your audio card? What driver is running the chipset?

does the sound happens on xp?

my netbook has all the contrary, when on xp and no sound is being played i hear a noise all the time, clics and pops and hiss all the time, in pclinux that doesn't happen

possible reasons n your case for this behavior is wrong sound driver being used, also volume levels on unused channels too high(disable the channels you don't use and/or lower those channels)

also the mouse could be doing interference but that is unlikely since it only happens when the sound is being played

sometimes when you overclock a machine this happens but i doubt that you can overclock that laptop

I have been experiencing audio problems in the last week or so.

Distorted start up sound; a lot of other sounds distorted when starting .....  seems to go after starting some audio file in an app .....  initially when it appeared it lasted much longer .....  now only during start up sound for the most part.

I haven't looked to see if I can figure out why so cannot be any help, sorry 

I use PulseAudio for controlling device selection.

Thanks guys. I reset the actual sound driver the laptop was using and voila! It works. Very strange but it worked.

T6 nailed it!     .... somehow i did'nt catch that they were "built in" laptop speakers.

i'm glad for billy's success, and all the help he received here.
