Back for another attempt

Hi
If I install PCLOS on a separate drive, does that drive have to be the first boot drive or can it just be anywhere in the boot sequence

PS I currently have Windows 8 on that drive and I don't like it :-\

windows always wants to be first in line.  linux will boot from anywhere you put it pretty much.

Does the drive containing the intended Linux install have to be put in the boot seguence in the BIOS prior to installing?

No it doesn't, but you have to know where you want the Linux bootloader to be: in the MBR of the Linux drive or on your Linux partition. If the bootloader in the MBR of the first drive is a Windows bootloader you may never get a chance of booting anything but Windows without changing the boot order. If Grub is installed to the MBR of your first drive you can chainload any other bootloader on any other drive or partition, or even boot most of them directly without chainloading.

In many modern computers you can pick which drive to boot from before the boot starts, regardless of your BIOS settings. On my box I just have to hit F12 before any bootloader starts.

Did the following and still can't install
(did this several times from either from boot menu or live, auto partition or manually create partition, windows or linux first on grub menu)
Latest was this:
Install from Live to 150GB second drive
partitioned as follows  swap=7GB, / =25GB, /home=115GB
Install starts (takes almost 25 mins)
Grub on main (windows) drive
Graphical interface (leave suggested boot sequence)
Message =writing grub (or something similar) but hangs at the little gray screen
restarting shows grub menu but hangs when selecting Linux....booting to windows is fine
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

What you interpret as a hang is probably the system creating the initrd image needed for the kernel to boot properly on your specific hardware. This can take some time, depending on the specific hardware, RAM available, CPU speed, etc. If you reboot before the system has finished the installation, including the complete grub installation, your system is broken from the start.

You can try running Redo MBR from the LiveCD session. Before changing the MBR it show the boot menu in text editor. You can cancel changes at that point.

Have installed PCLOS quite a few times and the installation is very fast - about 5 minutes. :-\

Yes I do quit after about 15 mins.  Do you suggest I reinstall and just wait it out?
My system is an AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2 MHz
6 MB ram
It shouldn't take 20 to 25 mins for an install on  a 150GB 10,000 rpm Hard disk
I don't think the Radeon ATI 4870 is a problem but I knaow the onboard sound is.

What filesystem are you choosing for / and /home partitions?

Hi
Both are ext4
It is now installed.  I just waited about 5 min for grub to be written and voila.
PCLOS FullMonty seems kind of slow but I'll give it a whirl and see
