[SOLVED] How to set up remote access to my PCLinuxOS computer from Windows?

Hi All,

I am pretty new to Linux and I have a problem of remotely controlling my Linux computer from another computer, in particular, my Windows laptop.

With my Mac Pro, I use Vine Server on the Mac and VNC viewer on my Windows laptop to control the Mac.

I tried to access my Linux computer with the same VNC viewer but access was denied. I have searched for an option to allow remote access in PCLInuxOS' menues but, surprisingly, it produced no result!

Reading this Forum, I have found pretty complicated instructions on using TightVNC. I followed instructions, installed TightVNC on both machines, set the password to ask for the access in the X-Terminal of my PCLinuxOS computer. After that I was able indeed to connect to it via TightVNC viewer from my Windows laptop but I do not see more than a square with a gray-brown pattern. Also VNC viewer can now access my Linux PC but the result is not better.

Does anybody know a simple solution to this problem?

I use Teamviewer (it's in the repro's) to access Window's and Linux from home.  I help a few older folks, like myself, who need an occasional visit from someone who has enough experience to help them when they get in a fix.

You might try it, get Teamviewer for your PCLinuxOS from our repository.  And download the Window version from their main site at:

http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx

I use nxserver and nxclient from the repos for the same purpose. I tried and failed to get teamviewer working for comparison. I'm not sure that is because it is more difficult than nx*, or just because I didn't have a pressing need to figure out what was necessary.

Maybe I'll try nx* in the future....

TeamViewer is deadly simple in my case... I just have to fill in the number and password of the person I'm connecting to (showed in his/her window of TeamViewer -- e-mailed or phoned to you), and there you go....

I've used them both and found TeamViewer to be much simpler. Maybe it's just that I am simple...

For dgaranin, its easy ability to use cross-platform on Macs, too, may be an extra benefit.

I have installed Teamviewer from repos on my PCLinuxOS computer, Teamviewer 6 is in the start menue, I try to start it and a jumping icon appears at the bottom of the screen but then it disappears and nothing happens. No messages.

Open a Konsole and enter teamviewer6

do you get any messages?

I have already rebooted.

But the advice to run Teamviewer in the Konsole was good. The message was that I cannot run Teamviewer as a root. Thus I signed in as user and then it worked.

Thank you very much for the help! The quality is very good, I can work remotedly now.

Dmitry, it is extremely bad practice to login as root. You should never need to, except as a last resort to fix something. When logged in as a regular user, you will prompted to supply the root password if you run anything needing root priveledges.
