No boot after update - KDE problem -Not Nvidia
« on: October 16, 2011, 10:44:11 PM »
I confess to not really paying attention to the output in synaptic, something about nvidia ...( apparently unrelated )

Now freezes during boot sequence.

As usual I am clueless.

Thanks in advance!

Updated nvidia? Didn't reboot after? Or what? Really, your information is way too sparse to figure out what happened and how to advise you.

One can only assume you are referring to "nvidia Optimus" based on your topic.

But no one will be able to help you on a "hunch".

If you describe your problems in more detail it would help everyone, help you.  ;) ;D

Sorry for the vagueness I am no really sure what is happening, Starts to boot nornally and just after "line" dissappears there are symbols across the screen lighting up as tasks are finished mine stops at the " world" and stalls, I do not know how to find this stopping point and read it through and see what info must be missing.

Seems like there was a nvidia evocation that turned the whole mess m around by pointing everything where it thought it should likeky look or something kile that

Nvidia was one of the updates- not the only one-but one that has given me problems in the past.

Maybe not this time ???

Wirehead, the information we need, still eludes us.

Is your system up to date?
What Desktop are you running?

Do you have any other evidence that "nvidia" is the problem?

From your description it sounds like you are using the kde version. Correct?

If you are to the point where the "world" icon is loading, and you can see it, it is very unlikely that your video card/driver is the problem. If it were, you would be stopped at the log in screen, likely the text log in.

It seems that your desktop is not completing its loading for some reason. Without more information from you, all we can do is guess. And that won't help.

Try:
Ctrl-Alt-F2
in a terminal screen you can  run drakxconf and set your screen driver to vesa for testing.
If... working check desktop settings off and try installing nVidia again.
or
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace (2x)
Sometimes a service is delayed witch blocks starting the KDE DE.
if working try another nVidia setting.

OK, let's try this again- I will try to give a better description.

Yes - KDE version.
Correct - to the world icon ( rules out nvidia )

New info:
After letting screen stay where it locked up at "world" icon for 6-7 Min., I get the crash screen:
Executable: KDED4
PID: 2017 ( or 3696 at another time )
Signal: segmentation fault (11)

Clicking OK returns me to login screen where I can repeat this as  an endless loop...

Rereading my posts from last night reinforces my resolve to not post after drinking, really sorry for being the cyberinebriate poster child...

Try this:
Log in as root, open Synaptic, reload and mark all upgrades > apply & apply >>> reinstall kde4libs, kde4-config, kdebase4 and kdebase4-core >>> reboot.

I can't log in successfully as self or root ,when I attempt to log in as either,
screen gets to "world" icon  and crashes, 5-6 min. later the crash screen shows. Click OK on crash screen and returns me to log in screen.
Can't get past the "world" ( I'm sure there is a song title in there somewhere...)

After kde fails to load, do you get the text login? If so, log in as root. You will be at a terminal prompt at this point. Use these commands:
Code: [Select]
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
Code: [Select]
apt-get remove kde4lib kde4-config kdebase4 kdebase4-core
Code: [Select]
apt-get install kdelibs4 kde4-config kdebase4 kdebase4-core
Code: [Select]
reboot
Use them in the order given.

No text login, just the regular login screen.

I can't remember off the top of my head how to get to the text only screen.
I will see if I can jog my memory during boot.

Thanks for your help and patience!
