Are there any Linux replacements for these programs?
« on: October 14, 2011, 01:25:02 PM »
Hello,

I am forced by circumstances to migrate fast to Linux, so I need to know if there are good Linux replacements for these programs:
Disclaimer, I use them in my Windows environment, I am not promoting any of them.
I would like to avoid using Windows in VM because my Win7 is in the compromised laptop and it did not came in DVD so I can not install it again, another minus to M$.

1 A full Organizer and for me an Activities Control Center: http://www.gemx.com/solutions_do_organizer.php#p7GPc1_3
2 Documentation: http://www.gemx.com/solutions_texnotes_pro.php#gpm1_2
3 Code Charge Studio (RAD):  http://www.yessoftware.com/products/product.php?product_id=1
4 PSPad Code Editor:  http://www.pspad.com/en/
5 Internet Phone: http://www.vyke.com/
6 RealDraw Pro: http://www.mediachance.com/realdraw/index.html
7 Koolmoves Flash tool:  http://www.koolmoves.com/
8 PhotoFiltre Free: http://photofiltre.free.fr/download_en.htm
a wonderfull fast and easy program, can not be compared with GIMP.

I also have various email accounts handled by Thunderbird, a friend of my centralized all his accounts in one single account in gmail, but given my bad experience with Google Wave, I am reluctant to solutions in the Cloud, any suggestions to simplify the email use and administration are welcomed.

Thanks a lot for your kind advice to a newbie.
Best regards

Aside of Thunderbird (which is in repos) I don't know any of those programs, probably because I've been mainly in Linux for several years now.

The organizer (Activities Control Center) is similar to Sunbird (which I like) or even Korganizer  but you will have to try.

If you really need some of those programs maybe should try to run them in Wine, I do that with two programs which doesn't have Linux replacements (not that I like at least)

For the rest, maybe some other friend could help you

any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

4 PSPad Code Editor:  http://www.pspad.com/en/

For a code editor, most any of the Linux editors should do, although they may not have all the features you're used to.  I get along just fine with kwrite (the default text editor on KDE) but I'm not doing any heavy development.  Back when I was, I used UltraEdit (a commercial program), which now has a Linux version available, here:

joejac...

Does that this mean you have/had a legitimate version of win7 on your laptop?  I'm guessing so.

Does your computer have a Windoze sticker on it?  IF it does... You can get/use/download any equal copy... and use it.  Whatever version you had... basic, home, pro, ulti.  The copy, whether hacked or not has to be what was on it.  RE-install win7 on it, and do your extra install and tweaks.

THEN
, install the latest PCLOS on a separate partition or hard-drive.

.......more if needed........

When I last used Windows, (Win2K) it was the hands down best available. Haven't used the Linux version, but it seems to be the Windows equivalent.

For a free advanced editor, Kate works for me.

Kate is an excellent Linux/KDE programmer's editor.

But I'm old-school enough that I still prefer vim. ;) ;D

As to the other programs, you probably won't find direct, one-to-one equivalents.  You might have to do some trialing, to find ones that will do most of what you want, and you can live without, or work around, the "missing" functionalities.

Kate is really good, but I do find myself using vim more often than not.

I just took a quick look at few few of the OP's links, I didn't see many functions that can't be done on Linux with either native or web apps, but I don't think there's much in the way of direct one-to-one replacements. Particularly that organizer program, I do most of that stuff with several different programs. I can't imagine finding one program that does all of that on Linux, it goes against the 'one thing well' Unix philosophy.

joejac:

For the photographic apps, read this entire thread;

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,97278.0.html

and try all the apps listed by the various posters. There are quick lightweight apps, and heavy duty industrial quality applications mentioned. Whatever you want done, can definitely be done by one, or a combination, of those mentioned.

Have fun playing with them.  ;D

You can use this program to recover the win7 key from the hard drive....it has a free version, works well and has saved several folks I know from having to purchase a new copy of windows. check it out here..that way you can at least dual boot.....(personally I'd stick with PClinuxOS)

Geany is another great editor to have a go at. It has some great features for coders, including the ability to run tests on your code.

+1 for Geany.

It can have a different color scheme for whatever type of file your are editing. Good for highlighting keywords/commands/structures.

There is a 'dark' scheme someone made which is easy on the ole eyes. Great for the 2am hacking moments...
