Well  I have the ip address, I'll try to configure the printer by ip and see if it works.

Nmap scan report for brwc0cb388ed2d5 (10.92.198.116)
Host is up (0.037s latency).
Not shown: 994 closed ports
PORT     STATE SERVICE
21/tcp   open  ftp
23/tcp   open  telnet
80/tcp   open  http
515/tcp  open  printer
631/tcp  open  ipp
9100/tcp open  jetdirect

I'll report back

Thanks  pags

It would appear that your printer has an embedded web server, as well.  You can use this to monitor/do diagnostics on your printer from a web browser, by entering the IP.

That might help you shed some light on your initial problem, also...

"I installed task-printing-misc."
that's already installed.

I tried to re-install it with ip address , still the same.  I'll check with the browser to see if anything is obvious.

Another problem with a Brother HL5370DW wifi printer.

PCC hardware setup finds the printer and then installs the drivers. I setup the
settings and policies but the enabled option dosn't stick, as soon as I press
"print test page" it report stopped-unable to locate printer Brwc.....

I've been searching since yesterday for a solution but can't find one.
I tried to remove all cups related packages and the brother packages , rebooted
and reinstalled them all. but wound out with a borked system and had to re-install
the system completely. So I tried again still the same.

As soon as I place a tick in the enable box and click ok, it's blank again. Why would
the printer be installed and can't be enabled.

It's wifi and has it's own address on the network.

Thanks for any help.

I have that exact same printer, and while I have never tried it with a direct wireless connection (it's plugged into my wireless router), I did have to sort through the 4 different printers it showed up as on the network - only one of which works, the other three acting as you have described.

Let PCLOS search for while - 3 of the 4, including the one that actually worked, didn't show up right away - took several minutes.  Also you can download the latest ppd file direct from Brother to get all the features - you just have to figure out where (what directory) to place it.  But mine works flawlessly after that initial mucking about.

Thanks for the reply Chief, I'll try it tomorrow morning at work, but when PCC finds it, looks for the drivers and installs them then stops searching.  I'll let it go for a while without doing anything and see what happens.

Thanks You for the reply.   I'll report back.

OK, finally working!!!
I tried to let pcc find more than one printer but after 20 minutes, it still found only the one. I put in the printer ip address in the URl and changed "default behavior" to "authenticated" in thew policies and then checked in the "enable" button and waited ~10minutes after which I tried a test page. IT's finally ALIVE!!! As long as it doesn't change ip address, because it's on dhcp and the company that takes care of the network here has the router locked down, It's a sonic wall router and only accessible with a cat5 cable directly. If I ever see the tech I'll ask him to put it on a permanent ip so it won't change every time there's a power outage or someone unplugs it.

Thank you all so much for the fantastic help:D

+1!  That's a good idea.

Servers and Printers really should be given static IPs, particularly in a work environment, as a best practice.

We have a Brother MFC-7840W Wi-Fi Laser Printer here in the office.  I bring my PCLinuxOS notebook in each day to do all online work.

I installed task-printing-misc.
Quote
Meta package for printer drivers for miscelaneous printers
This meta package will install every printer driver available for printers from
miscelaneous manufacturers.

This package should cover printers from:
Alps, Anitech, Apollo, Apple, Avery, Brother, Citizen, Citoh, Compaq, Dec,
Dell, Dymo, Fujitsu, IBM, Imagen, Infotec, Kodak, Kyocera, Minolta, Mitsubishi,
Nec, Oce, Olivetti, Panasonic, Pcpi, Pentax, QMS, Ricoh, Samsung, Star,
Tektronix and Xerox.

I'm able to print directly to the Brother printer with no problems. In fact, just got done printing up all my Christmas labels using Libre Office.
