google chrome instead of chromium?
« on: October 11, 2011, 10:11:02 PM »
 ???
dear buddies,
Please appologize me for the question, but I'm a PCLinuxOS fresh user. But I would like to install  the google-chrome stable really . Someone else taught me at another hub that I could install it by using the terminal as root like with these commands:

su:

rpm -ivh google-chrome-stable_current_i386.rpm

or

rpm -i google-chrome-stable_current_i386.rpm

But both failed and I didn’t make it up at all.It has ever gotten errors and I coudn’t install it. Could you give some hints. I know there are in PCLinuxOS ‘s repositories the chromiun and the iron-browser, but i have already installed them. But I want to install the google-chrome stable because there are some differences and I need it. I’m a PCLinuxOs newcomer (nobo) but I like it best. I appreciate your helpfull hints.

cheers.
 :D

Both command should have worked, what error msg did you get?

It is inadvisable to install from outside sources. You render your install unsupportable, and doing so can break your install. If you install from outside the official repos, you must be prepared to troubleshoot and fix any problems yourself.

Chromium is the open source web browser on which chrome is built; i.e. chrome is chromium, 'renamed and rebranded.'

It is the same code from the same code tree. One has Google branding and the other does not. I even include the pdf library from Chrome into Chromium. What that being said, you need to be in su root mode to install Google Chrome from a downloaded rpm. The output at the end of the installation via the command line is irrelevant. You also need to install the lsb rpms from synaptic prior to attempting to install Google Chrome.

Chromium from your Synaptic Package Manager = Google Chrome, same stable browser, easy to install. Go Chromium Browser ;D
