Have you tried adjusting the mic settings with a software audio mixer?

kmix or PulseAudio Volume control

You need to run the mixer KMix - I tend to find that the "mic" setting refers to the socket on the side of these machines (and is set up), and "front mic" refers to the built in one (and is set silent).

There are also two "task" programs in Synaptic, task-pulseaudio and task-pulseaudio-remove and sometimes removing pulse works, with other hardware adding it works, so try both of them in turn.

PCLinuxOS has no wealthy sponsors and can only survive with your donations! Don't wait it might be too late.

Running PCLOS on Athlon II/250 with 2Gb Ram using ASUS M2N68-AM Plus Mobo with Nvidia GF7600GT graphics, and Samsung NC10 Netbook

When i install pclos-KDE on my Aspire D255E, Kmix don't show the mics pots by default, you have to activate them, if you need them. They are named MIC and MIC BOOST. I suppose MIC BOOST is for the external jack. This is for KDE; On XFCE, i have no idea.
Also, do your friends a favor: Use a mic closer to your mouth instead of the internal mic, Reverberation is the enemy of intelligibility.
