(SOLVED)Problem with HP printer locking up system
« on: October 06, 2011, 07:16:24 PM »
This is a new one on me. The printer is a Photosmart D110 and was installed yesterday. It has both USB and wifi connections, although only one can be active. Wifi is disabled via the touchpanel setup and the printer is connected to the computer by USB cable. It also has a powersaving mode. When it goes into the powersaving mode, the touchpanel is disabled until touched again.

The computer locks up completely if the printer is turned off. Shown below are system logs of what happens before the computer locks up.

Re: Problem with HP printer locking up system

I have a different HP. The error message is something I get when I power up the printer. It happens to other people too. Not sure why, I just ignore it. That is a red herring.

Maybe something to to with re-detecting the device when re-powered up? Reinstall via the hp-setup command line utility, via cups or retry PCC?

Thanks for the suggestions, Phil. After the second computer lockup, I started digging through the log files. Then I decided to look for any possible locked files. In ~/tmp was a link to the old printer. The old printer had been deleted in PCC and was no longer showing up there or in CUPS. Taking no chances, I deleted the old printer link, then ran BleachBit as user and as root. The printer has now been powered off and on several times without incident.

I'm chalking this one up as a glitch in the matrix.
