Hi Just18
Yes K3B reads the contents of the CD, and copy's them perfectly, I will look up UDF in synaptic and install any packages I find, and get back to you.
Regards Jim

If K3b can copy the files then you should be able to access them from PCLOS .....

Hi Just18
Should, is just about the most over used word in computing, I know it "should" work, but it does not.
I have even copied the disk that came with my Baen book to a ordinary CD, just in case Baen were using those thin eco discs, but no luck.
I have searched synaptic, and installed fbreader, which is supposed to read all the e-book formats on the disk, so I am completely baffled as to why PCLinuxOS will not read the disk.
O well, I will just have continue to use openSUSE to read my disks, or even ( shudder ) Windows 7.
Regards Jim

I know this may seem like over-doing things a bit ......  but the situation causes me to wonder if you could - using K3b - create an image of the CD without burning; mount that image and copy the contents to a folder on the HDD ....  providing the contents are accessible from the mounted image.

regards.

Yeah, oldjim ... don't give up just yet. Just18 suggested a very good workaround.

If the CD is read by K3B, go to Tools > Copy Medium. On the Disk Copy window, uncheck everything leaving Only create image.

Click the Image tab and click the folder icon on the right-hand side. Select a location where you want the ISO to be written ... I suggest on your Desktop. Give it a Name (don't forget the .iso extension) and click OK. Click Start. Wait....  ;)

If you are able to do this, post back and we'll give you instructions on mounting the ISO.

Good luck.

if the disc has some from of security or something in the file structure or a weird name is the problem, the iso won't solve it

can you try to open the contents of the disc with another file browser?  pcman or konqueror?

Hi Archie
Well that worked, I now have a iso on my desktop, so I will try burning a disk, while I wait for you to get back to me.

T6. I have tried using a different file browser without successes, thanks for the thought though.

Regards to you both. Jim

I would not bother burning a disk with the ISO - although it may work I suppose.

First you should mount the ISO and view and hopefully copy the contents to a folder somewhere.

If you want a GUI for mounting the ISO try   AcetoneISO   from the repository.

I can finally read the contents of the disk in PCLinuxOS, mind you I do not think I want go thought that with all seven disks.
I am still baffled as to why I can not just read the disk in dolphin file manager as I can in openSUSE.
I think I am going send Tex some of my bouncing cookies, just the get my own back for the trouble he has caused me ;D
Thank to every one who helped.

Just create an ISO, mount it and read it when required .....  no need for burning disks.

One thought ....  do you have an entry in your  /etc/fstab  file for your optical drive?
If so comment it out (put  #  before the line) and save the file (as root), and then try again to read the disks.

Hi
No luck editing the etc/fstab as root, it would still only allow me to use K3B to copy the disk, still never mind it has been an interesting couple of days.
Thanks Guys

oldjim,
could I get a little info from you please?

The disks you refer to in this thread - from Baen - did they supply the physical media with the books already on the disk? .....  or did they supply an ISO for you to make your own disk?

Having looked at the Baen site it seems to say they supply ISOs  or a CD image file and not physical media such as disks, for lots (if not all) their products.

Maybe if you can clarify please.

Thanks  ;)

Why is this marked solved ? It's not solved at all. I have just upgraded and have the exact same problem:

K3B see the disk and can read/write to it whether it is a preexisting DVD or a blank one. I can even remove/insert while K3B is running and its display immediately reflects the change.

Device notifier does not notice the insertion and removal.  Nor can I find the mount point anywhere.

Not solved in my book, and googling for broken device notifier pulls quite a few hits, none of them solved.

The only thing I can think of is that Device Notifier has been updated (clue, it show a little triangle in the tray before you click it the first time) and now reads some different settings, but the update forgot about updating the config file.

Anyone knows where Device Notifier setting might be stored?

Because the original poster decided his problem was solved

The triangle shows when there are hidden icons for the tray

Resurrecting an old [SOLVED] thread is not going to help you much.
I suggest you start a new thread giving details of your problem, and if you think relevant link to this thread.
You have a better chance of getting a response when your thread is not marked [SOLVED]

Thank you! I went to setting and changed all to be always visible. I now realize I mistakenly removed, then added device notifier right after the update.  I think at that time I lost all the settings.

I also create /media/dvd directory and added this to /etc/fstab

/dev/sr0 /media/dvd auto umask=0022,user,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
So at least I could mount it manually.

Can't you just download from Baen? http://www.baen.com/library/defaulttitles.htm I download them as zipped HTML files and they work fine.
