Solved: Problems with Device Notifier
« on: October 05, 2011, 04:38:00 PM »
Hi
I an having problems with device notifier, I can not get  it to read the Baen book disks.
Baen are publishers of S/F and Fantasy novels ( www.baen.com ), and they give away CD's with some of their hard back books, providing them in the most of the popular e-reader formats.
For some reason the disk do not show up in Dolphin, and device notifier will only allow you copy the disk with K3B.
I know that device notifier should work, as it works fine in Suse 11.4 and Windows 7.

My laptop is HP Compaq CQ71 317EA  with a Intel Pentium/2.1GHz Processor and 4 GB of RAM.

A puzzled, Jim

what kernel are you using?

could be that the disc was recorded with a special security technology that is giving problems to our linux?

Hi Guys
I have tried installing a PAE kernel still no luck reading my Baen disks, I am really puzzled as to why SUSE 11.4 will read the disk and the far superior PCLinuxOS will not?

Hi
My poor baking skills aside, does anyone the solution to device notifier problem.
I feel sure I am missing something obvious, after all if SUSE can read the CD, I am sure PCLinuxOS should be able to.

Hi Jim,

Are you able to view the contents of the CD from a filemanager?

Hi Archie
No the CD does not show up in Dolphin at all, not even when I am lodged in as super user.
It's not that I mind using SUSE for this task, next to PCLinuxOS, it's my favorite distro.
I don't even mind using Windows 7, after all I, payed for it, I might as well get some use out of it. ;D
It just annoys me that they do this particular function better than PCLinuxOS

Is it only this particular CD or other CDs won't read as well?

HI Archie
Not as far as I know, it is just this series of CD's.
I just think I just must be missing the right program to make them open.
I very much doubt Baen would give away several hundred pounds worth of books and then encrypt the disk.
O well, back to the bouncing cookies. ;D

Does K3b see the contents of the disk?

What info does it supply about the structure of the media?

Is the disk perhaps using UDF and you don't have the necessary packages installed?

Hi Just18
Yes K3B reads the contents of the CD, and copy's them perfectly, I will look up UDF in synaptic and install any packages I find, and get back to you.

Hi
I tried the UDF packages and I still can not read the d**m disk, I think I am going to give up, and console myself by buying books on Amazon, ether that or go and bounce some more cookies. ;D
