checking/sending email is slow

Hi,

As topic says, checking/sending email is slow. It takes approx. 11 seconds to either send or receive, even when sending a small text file (no attachment).

I'm on PClinuxOS LXDE mini at the moment, but all Linux distros I've tried have this problem, incl. non-PCLOS distros and I've tried with multiple mail clients. Only webmail works fast.

Surfing and downloading works fine it seems, incl. torrent. Although with surfing it's almost as if sometimes there's nothing happening for a while after I clicked an url (hourglass/loading icon), so page loading is usually fast, but sometimes not. But that could possibly be the server where the website is hosted.

The modem/router I got is a Huawei hg655d. 

I'm not much into networking and don't know if I can change a setting somewhere to speed things up.

What mail client are you using?  Thunderbird?  Kmail?  Evolution?  Are you using a secure method of checking mail such as ssl or tls?   

Also, many mail providers (especially ISP's) these days provide limited resources to their pop mail servers (everything is focused on webmail, probably rightly so).  So this results in the issues you are having.

Back in my day, we had to wait 11 seconds just to get half the number dialed by the modem, before it could even start hand-shaking to establish a protocol to setup the transmission initialization!
(and it was uphill, both ways!)

Well it's not just email, it's everything that needs to connect to any server, incl. games. With my QuakeWorld client (FodQuake) I could connect to a server in a second or less and now I need to wait 10 seconds, which is just crazy. The same thing for game server scanners: everything takes a freaking long time. With Ubuntu I had the same problem so there's something Linux does differently in the networking department...

OK, that really sounds like a DNS problem.  Check your DNS servers in the networking portion of the Control Center.  If that look OK, replace them 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 or 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2.  These are Google's and 3coms old servers respectively.  See if that helps.

Change your DNS numbers and try again and see if that don't fix your issue.

Actually the issue most likely lays within your router or providers DNS! Your router is what supplies your DNS normally.

OK then, I looked in the CC network settings and I had no dns settings; just empty fields and selected was: 'get dns servers from DHCP'.

No dns servers were filled in in my modem/router either. But when I fill them in it doesn't make a difference (in config page of modem and CC - I did not yet try the text file). However, when filling in settings in CC, I didn't fill in Gateway, because I can't find the settings for it.

I did find out that when I use a specific gamescanner (from bdamage.se) I could connect fast, as it should, so as long as I use that program, the connecting to server is solved except from within the quake client (weird enough).


And ifcfg-eth0 has everything filled in, incl. dns nr's. I tried the google nr's too, didn't make difference for quake client or mail. I did try out a different quake client which can connect fast... so now I'm really confused

BTW: I forgot to add that the mail client doesn't make a difference (claws, thunderbird...etc) and the provider uses no encryption whatsoever (yes, very unsafe).

To be honest, even though the mail stuff is slower then in winxp, I can live with that. I just wonder why.

what modem and service are you using?

what router do you have?

the isp you have, sometimes will ask you to use a specific dns they provide

this seems to be the case

i remember a case where connection was erratic, speed was erratic too, ping was crazy

isp had to change the modem of the client and all problems solved

modem was mentioned in first post. And I have adsl2 connection via ethernet.

Anyway, after starting everything (incl. modem) up today, mailing is fast now. Haven't checked games yet, but this is already great news. Manually entering the dns nr's seems to have helped. I didn't got any message from the modem or PCLOS that restart was necessary so I didn't do it before.

Still weird why my provider did NOT mention anything about dns settings in the manual. I think this is because everything was set to receive dns from DHCP server, which is not as good apparently as manually filling in the dns nr's.

dns values can be changed by them

you sometimes have to call and ask

cablemodem rarely provides or requires a dns but adsl most times need it

i you are directly connected to the modem, i have seen cases where a router fixes that problem

Well my modem is both modem and router... But I'm happy cause QuakeWorld client is behaving as it should.

sorry, i was confusing that huawei with a older model that only had 1 ethernet connector, one white and brown, that is why i suggested the router

Anytime you change the DNS servers you have to restart the network server for those changes to take place. Sorry I should of mentioned that. I assumed that this was understood, I shouldn't assume anything.  I am glad that your network is working for you again.
