Yet another Firefox upgrade! (NOW in REPOS)
« on: September 30, 2011, 07:08:11 AM »
I've upgraded to ff 7.0 about three days ago, and what should flash up on my screen today?  A recommendation that I upgrade to 7.1 already.  (Not in the repos yet)  It seems to me that we are all being used as beta testers.

The release may be related to:

We’ve identified an issue in which some users may have one or more of their add-ons hidden after upgrading to the latest Firefox version, affecting both desktop and mobile. These add-ons and their data are still intact and haven’t actually been removed. We paused new updates to Firefox to minimize the potential impact on users and will soon release an update to fix this issue and ensure all your add-ons are visible and usable. In the meantime, if you notice an add-on missing entirely from the Add-ons Manager, you can use a simple workaround to recover them.

We are working hard to resolve this issue. We know how important add-ons are to you and apologize for the inconvenience.

Edit - if anyone has this problem please see:

I have nearly been caught out by this twice over, I am sad to say.

The mantra is you should only upgrade your software via synaptic, never from outside the repos.

The recent Firefox updates have the preference "Automatically check for updates (tick) Firefox"

On firefox top menu Edit > Preferences

Select Advanced > Update tab, untick as above.

You will need to do this for every user otherwise they may update automatically rather than via synaptic as recommended.

I let it check and update the add ons.

The only way it can automatically update itself is if it has writing access to its folder and it should not have it for normal users since the folder is in system space(/usr).

I do not think firefox can auto update in pclinuxos or in any linux distro even if that option is checked.

Additionally, using Help > About Firefox > Check For Updates will (if one is available) download a full version of Firefox and not just the updated "portion"

I saw the popup this morning, but it went away before I could click on it. So I went about my business, then a large popup appeared, giving me the option to get the upgrade. So I clicked on the button to get it, but all it said was "connecting to...." with a progress bar. It didn't go any further, so I closed the popup. No harm done....

Give me credit Phil, did I say I had updated?  The only things I have from outside the repos are OOo vanilla (I'm stuborn about this!) and vuescan - neither of which give me any trouble.

I admit my finger was hovering over the apply button this morning. Fortunately I did not, and it looks as if it does not matter anyway. I also nearly got caught out on another user account the last update, which is when I unticked the preference on that account.

This thing was previously reported by some other forum members. So at that I had made sure to untick that option for automatic updates. I have actually set it to not check for updates to Firefox.

Yet today I have seen the prompt to update Firefox.

This has become as annoying as Flash on Windows that wants to update every other day and there seems to be no damn way of turning it off.

That is odd bevaviour!! Although this doesn't help, I've never actually seen that prompt in all my VM's and they all have Firefox installed.

You could try changing the update channel in about:config

Look for the

app.update.channel

and it will probably be set to release

double click the entry and change the string to default

Restart Firefox and see how you go.

default: This channel is used when there is no channel information, for example if you build Firefox or Thunderbird yourself. There are no updates on this channel. This channel is frequently used by Linux distributions, given that they provide own updates through their respective package-management system
