ConnectBar
« on: October 04, 2011, 09:39:59 AM »
I'm on my PCLinuxOS notebook and I'm just surfing a round a bit.  I decided to check some news and went over to NewsMax to see their headline.

a site came up for ConnectBar. It claimed it was related to firefox and was asking me to install.  I closed out of the window tab and hit the lkink for NewsMax once more.  NewsMax came up. No sing of ConnectBar.

I just checked Firefox add-ons and there's no Connect Bar listed.

Looks like it's a virus redirect of some sort.

So, I'm thinking that it came up, tried to install, stalled out due to my running Linux and never took hold.

Am I correct? Anything I should check just to be sure?

Toonfully,

Mark

More like a web redirect. Looks like they can't drum up enough business on their own, so they're using redirect techniques.

"We have had several reports concerning deviants being redirected to a ConnectBar website via advertisements. We wanted to let you all know that we are aware of this issue and it appears to be a widespread issue across the internet, not exclusive to deviantART itself. We are currently working with our ad partners and other publishers to get this ad removed. Until it is removed, we ask that those experiencing this advertisement to continue to report it, as all information gathered can help bring us one step closer to bringing this bad boy down!

We'd like to remind everyone that ads that automatically redirect you off deviantART are not cool! If you come across this or any other redirecting ad please let us know. For more information on how to report bad advertisements please check out this helpful article and if you'd like to learn about our Bad Ad Reporting Plugin click here."

They claim to have an "amazing search system", "amazing search system" and something called "magnetize function".

EDIT: I just found a news website that contains links to other news articles. One of the links has been compromised by implanting a link to ConnectBar.

I don't believe it installed.

I'm wondering if I had clicked on the install link it would have.  I tend to think no, due to probably needing a Windows registry system, etc. which Linux does not have (thank goodness!).
