Setting Up DosBox Game Launcher
« on: September 30, 2011, 06:02:26 AM »
Okay, this is how I installed DBGL OFF of my desktop so I wrote this tutorial for those who wish to do the same.

Hope this helps someone out there. If you need help and use PCLinuxOS KDE (I use 2010) send me a PM.

HERE WE GO:

Placing DBGL (DosBox Game Launcher) and games OFF of your desktop:

If you're using PCLinuxOS KDE you'll get through this tutorial quite
easily. If you're using another OS please consult the forum members for
information; they'll be glad to help you.

First off, DBGL REQUIRES DosBox 0.65 (or higher) and Java 1.5 or higher
to be installed. If you have not installed these via your "Synaptic
Package Manager" I highly recommend you do so BEFORE you use DBGL. The
repositories contain Java AND DosBox 0.74 - get them both.

If you already have your dos games in folders and DBGL already installed
then this will be a breeze for you. Just drop the dos games in your
"/home" folder area. Same for your DBGL folder and follow along.

1. If you have not downloaded DBGL then now is the time. Below is the
   link: http://members.quicknet.nl/blankendaalr/dbgl/

Scroll down 1/4 the way down the page and in the center of the page
is the Linux downloads. Choose if you have 32 or 64 bit and download
   the proper tarball.

2. Once this tarball has been downloaded, exit online. Now we need to
get this tarball from where it was downloaded to which is in your
"downloads" folder. To find this folder, click on the "PC" at the
bottom of your screen and scroll up to "File Tools" then scroll over
   to "Dolphin". Click it.
Don't worry, Dolphin is VERY SAFE and you'll not cause problems with
any other part of your OS.

3. This is the area you'll unpack DBGL in along with placing your dos
games folders in. If you have dos games already in separate folders
then place it here and name it "dos games". This is the main "user"
folder in which PCLinuxOS allows you as a user. At the top of the
window should be your chosen name with a "- Dolphin" at the top. If
this is showing, you're in the right place!

4. Once you've gotten this far, you'll see a folder named "Downloads"
so click on it to open it. There you'll find the DBGL tarball. The
name of the tarball is dbgl0.73.tar.gz. Right click on the DBGL
tarball and select "copy". Exit the "Downloads" folder by clicking
on the "Up" button at the top of this window.

5. In an empty area and NOT on any folder, right click. Choose "paste"
and paste the DBGL tarball here. Click on the tarball which should
open ARK. ARK will unzip the tarball to this directory. At the top
right of this new window you'll see "Extract". Click it. Now a new
window pops up and at the bottom of this one in the center is "OK".
Click it. Allow ARK to decompress DBGL fully. Once this is done,
you'll see a new folder with the name dbgl073. This is where DBGL
itself now is located and is ready to be used.

6. Now that we have all our dos games and dbgl073 placed in the proper
area and OFF of our desktop, it's time to make this program run
from the desktop itself. So now close the "NAME - Dolphin" folder by
clicking on the small "x" at the top of the window to close it.

7. Back at the desktop, we'll now need to go to the bottom of the screen
to the application launcher menu bar. Once there, locate the "PC"
with the blue circle around it. This time RIGHT CLICK ON the "PC"
to bring up a new menu. Scroll your mouse up and click on "Menu
   Editor".

8. Now you're in the KDE Menu Editor window. On the left side of this
window you'll see a list of areas that are launched from the "PC"
menu when clicked on. If you already have a "games" menu area then
this is the best place for you to put DBGL. If you don't have this
then you'll just have to choose an area you wish. You can always
come back and change where you would like your "DBGL" to be launched
   from. No big deal.

9. In this KDE Menu Editor window itself, you'll see a list:

   > Applications
   > More Applications
   > Archiving
   > Documentation
   > Editors
   > File Tools
   > Games (if you have any games installed from Synaptic)
   > Graphics
   > Internet
   > Office
   > Software Center
   > Sound
   > System
   > Video
   > Other

So the above is showing on the left side of the KDE Menu Editor.
For now, let's place DBGL in "Editors" which actually it is an
"editor" for all your dos games. So, click on the small > to the left
of the word "Editors". Once clicked, it will "expand" and show below
KWrite and VI editor. Now what you need to do is to right click on
"Editors" and a small window will appear. Scroll down and click on
"New Item". A new box will open. Type in "DBGL" (without quotes)
and hit enter. A new "sub menu" called DBGL has been created.

10.Now DBGL should be highlighted in blue. Click on it to open it. On
the right side at the top you'll see the name DBGL. Below that is
Description where we can type in "DosBox Game Launcher" (without the
quotes). You'll also notice an empty grey area to the right of the
"Name:". Move your mouse over this area and you'll notice a small
blue box form there. Click on it. Now time to give DBGL an icon for
the menu. Of course this is located in the DBGL directory. Let's find
   it.

11.A new window will now pop up called "Select Icon - KDE Menu Editor".
On the left side there will be a small "dot" and the words "System
Icons:". We won't use this. Below this is a small empty clear dot
with the words "Other Icons". Click on it to activate it. To the
right of these words is a button "Browse". Click it.

12.At the top of this screen you'll see "Open - KDE Menu Editor" below
that you'll see the blue "up" arrow. Right now we're in our
"documents" area. Below the blue "up" arrow" you'll see where we are
located which should be > Home > Documents. Now we need to click on
that blue "up" arrow. Click it. Now you'll be located in the
"> Home" area where DBGL is located. Click on the DBGL folder and
open it. Next, find the dbgl.png file. This is your icon. Now the
main window will close and if all is correct you'll see you brand
new icon in the "KDE - Menu Editor" on the right side. It looks like
a tiny 5.25 diskette with a red label. Cute huh?

13.Now we have to tell the "KDE - Menu Editor" where DBGL is located and
to actually run the shell script. Since we have cute little icon we
have to tell the menu editor just where DBGL is located and how to
run it. This is very easy. Since we're back at "KDE - Menu Editor"
on the right side of the screen where we typed in the name "DBGL",
look below this and find "Command:" (without the quotes). To the
right of this is a small icon. Click on it to open a new window.

14.This should bring up "KDE - Menu Editor <2>". If so, look within the
screen and locate the dbgl073 folder. Open the folder and locate
the shell script "dbgl" (without the quotes) and click on it. Once
clicked, the new command needed to run dbgl073 will show in the
"Command:" area. Now you need to click on "Save" at the top right
side of the main window. "Save" has a small 3.5 disk next to it as
it's icon. Click it to save OR - you can click on the small "x" at
the top right side of the window. This in turn will ask you
"Save Menu Changes? - KDE Menu Editor" and you'll click on the "save"
button to save it. You now have a new entry in your actual menu!

That's all there is to it! It seems like a lot at first but you'll
get very used to this concept as time goes by. It's not that bad and
on the bright side you've got a new menu launcher for DBGL! Cool
   stuff!

If you require ANY help using PCLinuxOS KDE refer to the above for
reference or PM me at anytime for help. Hope this small tutorial
helps you to become more "in tune" with your wonderful PCLinuxOS
   software.

   Most importantly: just enjoy yourself!

   Sincerely;
   Will

PS: From now on to launch DBGL from your desktop all you have to do is click on the "PC" with the blue circle
around it, scroll up to "editors" and move the mouse over to DBGL. Click it. DBGL will launch!

My apologies to all; my connections have been hell. I am sorry about this but am still working with DBGL and DosBox. Give me time please.

Thanks for your understanding everyone.

I have currently installed a dual boot of Windows XP (yuck but it's lightening fast) and PCLinuxOS 2011.
This is a NICE setup. Should have done this sooner.
