You mean the plymouth boot-up screen? I taught myself by reading the scripts/checking out the graphics of the themes installed in /usr/share/plymouth/themes. It was just a matter of create/test/adjust and learn as I worked, after that. Easy enough and fun. :D

edit: Or did you mean the grub bootsplash?

Maybe Archie, Sproggy or timeth will drop by and share some tips. :D

Grub bootsplash should be 800x600 and in jpg format with metadata stripped out. -- Create it, save as png, close gimp. Open the png and save as jpg. -- The name should be back. A second copy of the same graphic named welcome should also be created.

The back.jpg graphic goes in /boot/gfxmenu, /usr/share/gfxboot/themes/PCLinuxOS/boot/message and /usr/share/gfxboot/themes/PCLinuxOS/install/. The welcome.jpg graphic goes in /usr/share/gfxboot/themes/PCLinuxOS/install/.
note: PCLinuxOS is the default theme folder. You will want to create your own.
note2: gfxmenu and message are cpio files.

We all had to go through that first small step and realize that the walk wasn't that hard at all. There are several tutorials on the Net but only a few are actually good enough for laymen wishing to take a dip into GRUB to SPLASH ...

Here's one I would recommend - http://brej.org/blog/?p=158

GRUB has a number of workarounds ... and my favorite is cpio -i and ls | cpio -o

Login managers (and the KSplash after that) are much easier to create...

My suggestion, konaexpress, is for you to read and understand as much as you can and then we can have an exchange of what we already learned. Maybe even a question or two about problems (with really easy answers).

Yes, this is what I found.

You do great work man, it's nice that you also put out your svg files.  New users could learn from your stuff.

On a side note, I'm sure that no one has made a util for LXDE to change this stuff like a theme changer would? Download a theme and whamo!, it's done? One more for the list after I figure out how to make a conky changer. Something simple like a conky lib that can import, export, rename and apply. There are allot of conky files floating around out there, it would be nice to change them on the fly.

EZSwitch. You can use it to switch plymouth themes. It is installed by default on every LXDE release. >>> Menu > More Applications > Configuration > EZSwitch.

Whoowee, Linux is a rabbit hole. OK, I will go check this out. Do the files have to be in a folder or zip file or what.........I will go look at it.

EDIT: oops!.......thanks Neal!

Found it but it keeps saying "Plymouth theme unchanged." when I select the LXDE theme. Other than that, cool beans!

Now, I have to break away and go find a coffee wallpaper for someone............

You will get that message, if you try to switch to the theme you are using. Try installing some more themes. There are plenty in the repos. On installation, the last installed theme will be selected.
