[SOLVED] Printing error "/usr/lib/cups/filter/gstoraster failed"
« on: September 23, 2011, 04:33:26 PM »
Somewhere in the past couple of updates something has changed.  I can no longer print anything. All I get is a error "/usr/lib/cups/filter/gstoraster failed" and it printsa complete BLACK sheet of paper. Anything I try printing is completely black when printed.  I am using a Epson CX4800 and last updated my system this morning. It is using the  2.6.38.8-pclos1.bfs kernel with a AMD 2800+ 1.6gig processor - 2GiB RAM

CUPS is at version 1.4.6-1pclos2011
GUTENPRINT-CUPS is at version 5.2.7-1pclos2011

Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this mess!  I really do need to be able to print again. I tried a search for this error but all it came back with was about LibreOffice not printing in landscape.

You an try deleting all references to your printer, restart and set it up again. Seems there is a common thread and it is Epson printers.

I did as you suggested and now it does print, but only in black and white...........No color, no matter what settings I select.  These are the setting that now shows

Description:   EPSON Stylus CX4800
Location:   workbox.localhost.localdomain
Driver:   Epson Stylus CX4800 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.7 Simplified (color, 2-sided printing)
Connection:   usb://EPSON/Stylus%20CX4800
Defaults:   job-sheets=none, none media=na_letter_8.5x11in sides=one-sided

This may be the thread thay Tex is referring to:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,97245.msg823287.html#msg823287

Thanks for the link. I did go over it and if I run from the live cd the printer works fine. Prints both color and black and white. If I run from my hard drive, which was updated this morning, it will only print black and white NO color.

The only thing that I really see that is different is Epson Stylus CX4800 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.7 Simplified when it ONLY print in black and white and when it prints in both color and black and white it is Epson Stylus CX4800 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.6 Simplified. So it appears that Gutenprint is the problem.

How can I go back to the older version 5.2.6 of Gutenprint?

gutenprint packages were updated a month ago. Have you used your printer in the past month?

ghostscript packages were updated a couple of days ago to 9.04 in an attempt to address a landscape print issue.

Also rpm -qf /usr/lib/cups/filter/gstoraster is from a ghostscript package.

Please update ghostscript to 9.04-2 and see if it helps or not.
