Found a supra light Office Suite, try to compile it. Need help :)
« on: September 18, 2011, 07:11:14 AM »
Hi,

I was thinking we have great apps but when it comes to Office suite we have "only" the most beautiful ones, which also are the heavy cavalry, if I can say so.

Abiword is not very reliable on the time, the files happen to get corrupted, large files sometimes are not very well handled, and I always prefer for this reason to use Libreoffice. In a few months or years we will be able to use the OO-Light in construction by a team since some time.

I went to the web have a look about all this... google docs : ok, why not ? Yet if a connection to the web happen to be missing...  ::)

But I found SIAG, in a page of liste Office suites for Linux, (at lea-linux.org). First question I wondered, is it developed currently ? Answer is YES !

http://siag.nu/

Quote
Siag Office is a tightly integrated, free office package. It consists of the spreadsheet Siag, the word processor PW, the animation program Egon, the text editor XedPlus, the file manager Xfiler and the previewer Gvu.

Incredible ? All in 1.5 MB sources...  :o

sources:
http://siag.nu/pub/siag/

[   ] siag-3.6.1.tar.gz       19-Apr-2010 23:33  1.5M

I added all packages for devel I was missing, and still get this error at the end of the configure:

Quote
checking for main in -lXext... no
checking for main in -lXmu... no
checking for XCreateIC in -lX11... yes
checking for main in -lXpm... no
Xpm library not found

I have all devel Xest, Xmu, and Xpm installed. I have looked at the web for Xpm by the way : that's old stuff ?

ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/libraries/
ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/libraries/libXpm-4.7.tar.gz 233 KB    29/06/1996    00:00:00

our's is yet older : 3.5.9.

Who is interested to help get to a good build result ?

Regards,
Mélodie

Mel,

I may be incorrect, but I was under the impression that SAIG development stalled/died and nothing has been done for about 18months now, you may find that the sources are not easy to compile from for that reason.

The current trelease entry is listed at apr 2010 as the last modified page

Looks like the mailing list for the project came to an end in 2009.(unless there is a new one)

The freshmeat project page lists the last change in 2006

The Freshmeat page is outdated, but the page of the main site is not, and I won't consider 2010 too old for a version. One year or a little more does not mean there is no continuity.

It is nice from you to answer, but did I ask if that is too old to consider giving it a try ? No, I come to the advanced section to seek help about the libs declared missing. If the source of the issue can be found, it will be time then to send a mail to the developer to seek for information about the continuity of his project, that I just discovered now.

While you are here... off topic : it seems there is a new Zathura out there. ;)

I tried Siag years ago and it was very light but I remember some problems (don't ask my memory is not so good)

It seems that last version is 3.6.1  released 10 Nov 2006 http://freshmeat.net/projects/siagoffice/

That's consistent with the dates in the folders inside the siag-3.6.1.tar.gz file

If Siag works it could be a good addition for light work

Ok !

I sent a mail to the developer a moment ago, let's see if he will answer.

Thanks.

Yes, he answered:

There hasn't been a public release in quite a while. I think of it more
as "maintenance" now as it already does what I need.

I'll have a look at your forum post.

 Ulric

I am looking forward to read more, of course.

That seems like good news, even if there is no new "features" a working version could be a good addition for light DE's

I agree. Even with an old GTK theme... I we could compile it for a start...

No KDE 1, you can tell by the trash can and window decoration.
Just a lowly Linux Admin, lovin' redhat based Distributions.
