[SOLVED] E17 "Gkrellm-floating point exception: CPUFreq (create_monitor)"

I've got a fully updated KDe17 (Tex's iso) installed on a separate partition. Every time I try to add the CPUFreq plugin to the configuration, Gkrellm crashes with that xmessage in the subject title. I just re-installed Gkrellm and Gkrellm-plugins to no avail...still crashing.

Is there any way to fix this?

Well Tuxalish ,  because used Conky , in the  Iso Black-Myst works fine , in KDE, I could not help, do not use it, sorry.

Hi Agust, glad you're back with us, I've missed you! I'm not using KDE on this partition, it's the full version of e17 that Texstar created back in Nov/Dec 2010 that has just some KDE applications/libraries installed. And also, gkrellm is NOT a KDE app., I think it's Gnome.

Anyway, thanks for the reply...I'm still trying to figure out why the cpufreq-plugin keeps crashing gkrellm. I have Linuxera's Barebones e17 installed on my old laptop and Gkrellm/Cpufreq-plugin works fine on it.

See if you have cpufrequtils installed on that machine. I would also look on the laptop where it works and see what cpufreq packages are installed. These are, generally speaking, intended for laptop use.

Hi DJ....I do have cpufreq-1.0-28pclos2010 and cpufrequtils-008-1pclos2010 installed on this e17 partition. Matter of fact, I re-installed both of these packages as well as the gkrellm and gkrellm-plugins packages. This is a desktop 'puter, I'm dual booting with up-to-date pclos KDE on another partition where gkrellm is working a treat with the cpufreq plugin. I have used Tex's "Tips and Tricks" thread: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,93564.msg782452.html#msg782452 to set up all my installations and it has worked on all except this one.

When I navigate to... /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies, I get this response: cat: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies: No such file or directory.

There is no "cpufreq" folder in that file! I tried to copy it off the KDE install (via flashstick) and paste it into e17, but it won't let me do it, something about permissions.

Also, when I invoke 'cpufreq-info', the response is: "analyzing CPU 0: no or unknown cpufreq driver is active on this CPU maximum transition latency: 0.00 ms."

I can live without it for sure, it's just driving me mad!

I don't have a laptop, so I'm just going by the thread you linked to.

I get the same result as reported by Sling-Shot "cat: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies: No such file or directory" on my Toshiba Satellite A305d running PCLOS 2010 with all the most recent updates

What kernel version do you have installed? canajun solved his issue by installing a different kernel.

I installed the pae.bfs version and that cured it.

The file has to be copied by root user. However, I don't believe just copying the file will solve your issue.

I'm using the 2.6.38.3-pclos1.bfs kernel on e17 partition, and the 2.6.38.8-pclos1.bfs on KDE partition (where cpufreq works, same hardware). I really have no use for the pae.bfs kernels cause I only have 2 GB of RAM installed.

I'm going to completely remove the cpufreq apps in synaptic and then install them again to see if that might fix it. Thanks for your help (again!) DJ...I'll keep you posted.

Yeah, I thought the pae kernel was overkill, too. 2.6.38.8-pclos1.bfs works on your KDE install. How about installing that one on your e17 partition?

Well, the complete remove/re-install didn't work... I guess I'll try the 2.6.38.8-pclos1.bfs kernel on e17, however, I think there was a point in time when my e17 and KDE installs were using the same (older) kernel where cpufreq worked in KDE and didn't work in e17.

Success! I was missing the driver for cpufreq. My AMD processor requires the powernow_k8 driver. As soon as I modprobed "powernow_k8"...presto!...I got access to cpufreq-info, cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies, etc.

I then added powernow_k8 to the /etc/modprobe.preload file, rebooted, and, at long last, got my gkrellm working. Thanks again for your help DJ, I'm going to mark this thread [SOLVED] !!!
