Display won't work after suspend
« on: September 17, 2011, 02:01:01 PM »
Hello everybody, this being my first post, I first want to congratulate and thank everybody who develops for, donates, troubleshoots, reports bugs, submits patches, supports, participates in any way, etc. to PCLinuxOS; it's a fantastic distro.

I have an old Toshiba satellite a105-1014 laptop that I have converted to a Linux internet terminal or whatever, for my guests at my bed and breakfast.

I have tried several different Linux distros on this computer from my huge stack of live CDs, but none work as well as PCLinuxOS. The speed at which it runs a full gnome desktop and the hardware detection are unrivaled by any other distro. Only Puppy Linux, or other light weight distros even come close in performance, but none as full featured as PCLinuxOS; it's truly impressive.

However, I am having one issue that I hope I can get resolved with your help.

The display never comes back on after the lid is closed and the computer goes to sleep/suspend. When I reopen the laptop after it has gone into suspend mode I hear the fans and the hard drive starting up so it seems like it has resumed or woken from sleep/suspend but the display will not come on again.

I have waited patiently for the display to come back on, but it never does. No combination of hitting keys opening and closing the lid again or anything will get the display back on.

The only way that I've found to get the display to work again, is by disconnecting the power, and removing the battery and putting it back in again. Then, at last, it will boot with the display working as normal.

Having this computer working this way for my guests, I'm sure there will be many instances in which this may happen, and it will be very frustrating to have to always do this trick to get it to work or to explain it to my guests and expect them to do it.

I'm hoping I can get this issue resolved with your help. If there is any information that I can provide you to assist me in figuring out or fixing this problem, like copying and pasting some log files or whatever, I'll be happy to do it.

Thanks again, PCLinuxOS is an amazing distro and I hope I can keep it on this computer, and hopefully turn  some new people on to it.

Hi sslove and welcome,

I'm sorry there's been no help earlier than this, but I'm guessing nobody else has experienced the problem.

Can you enter lshal | grep quirk into a Konsole and post the result please

Regards
Andy

Not to oversimplify things, but I've seen this frequently and often just pressing the power button will wake the machine.  Have you tried pressing the power button briefly after opening the lid?

andy, ok, here's what i get in the terminal after pasting the command you gave me:

power_management.quirk.s3_bios = true  (bool)
power_management.quirk.s3_mode = true  (bool)

omskates, i have tried the powerbutton, nothing. only killing the whole system and removing/replacing the battery will get the screen working again.

OK,
a bit more info and something to try
enter lshal | grep system.hardware into a Konsole and post the output

enter pm-suspend into a Konsole (I'm guessing you won't be able to resume but try anyway)
post the contents of /var/log/pm-suspend.log

enter pm-suspend --quirk-dpms-on into a Konsole (hoping that this will work. If not, post the contents of /var/log/pm-suspend.log again)

Regards
Andy

Hello sslove - looks like you are in good hands with Andy but I wanted to add a thought that may be too simple but wouldn't hurt to try.

I have heard elsewhere that the screensaver (becomes activated on resume) can cause this kind of failure.  Can you test it also with the screensaver disabled.  Just trying to eliminate a possibility for what its worth.

And welcome.

Edit: I just read your first post again and picked up on the Gnome part.  What installed version are you using and is it up to date?

thanks andy, and sorry i've been MIA since posting for help. here are the results.

lshal | grep quirk

  power_management.quirk.s3_bios = true  (bool)
  power_management.quirk.s3_mode = true  (bool)

pat, the installed version is

pclos gnome 2010.10
build 2010/10/26
kernel 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs
gnome 2.32.1

the first thing i did after the install, was to update the system, which took a long while, although the about pclos menu option still shows it as pclos 2010.10

  system.hardware.primary_video.vendor = 4098  (0x1002)  (int)

enter pm-suspend into a Konsole (I'm guessing you won't be able to resume but try anyway)

suspend went into effect, and i was not able to wake up the computer.

post the contents of /var/log/pm-suspend.log

enter pm-suspend --quirk-dpms-on into a Konsole (hoping that this will work. If not, post the contents of /var/log/pm-suspend.log again)

using this suspend, the result was a little different. as usual, the display would not come back on no matter what, not even removing and replacing the battery had any result. i then pulled out all power sources; both battery and ac adapter, then, finally, i was able to restart with the display working again. here is the pm-suspend.log output:

Blast - still, mice and men and all that.

I hadn't noticed that youre running gnome, I don't know think it will have any bearing on this but I may be worth checking on the official gnome forum for another point of view http://linuxgator.org/gnome/forum/

In theory you already have the correct quirks in place but for some reason the video card is not initialising. I can see no simple way of tracking down the fault so we'll just keep trying.

Two more

pm-suspend --quirk-vbe-post

and

pm-suspend --quirk-s3-bios --quirk-s3-mode --quirk-vbe-post

Glad to see you haven't given up sslove.  Just one thing before I bow out because there are issues with updating this install and verifying the correct video driver that can be best handled by someone else:  I didn't see anywhere that you tried the mouse/touchpad to bring the monitor out of sleep after a wake from resume.  Have you tried that?  I have screensaver turned off and no "lock on resume" so that I never see that issue.  Just a thought.

Good luck.

ok andy, i'll check out the gnome forum.

mtnman, i have definitely tried the trackpad buttons, the trackpad, the function buttons, all sorts of buttons on the keyboard etc. none of that does anything. when i hit the amber pulsing power button however, it immediately turns green, the hard drives spin up, theres a beep sound, and the fans come on, so it's definitely coming out of suspend mode right away, only the display does not light up at all.

i noticed that pclos comes with an nvidia configuration tool, but when i launch the pclos control center and go to hardware>configure video card, the card that is auto selected says "ati radeon x1950 and earlier" maybe you guys already know this from the output of the log file, i don't know, it's an overwhelming amount of information, and i don't know what i'm supposed to be looking for in the log files, but just giving you all some additional info in case that helps at all.

there are many different cards i can select, would it be foolish to try to select any others and see how the machine works with them? i ask here before i try because i wouldn't want to lose the display all together, and maybe not be able to get back to where it's mostly working, as it is now.

here's the log output for pm-suspend --quirk-s3-bios --quirk-s3-mode --quirk-vbe-post

Initial commandline parameters: --quirk-s3-bios
--quirk-s3-mode
--quirk-vbe-post

OK I'm getting suspicious now

Quote
i noticed that pclos comes with an nvidia configuration tool, but when i launch the pclos control center and go to hardware>configure video card, the card that is auto selected says "ati radeon x1950 and earlier" maybe you guys already know this from the output of the log file

The Toshiba Satellite A105-S1014 should have an Intel GMA950 graphics card, not NVidia or ATI

as root enter the following

lspci | grep VGA

and

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver

Bare Metal 1         Bare Metal 2
Intel Celeron 420M   Intel i5 540M
2GB Ram              4GB Ram
Intel 943GM          Radeon HD 5650 PCI Express
RT2573               RT2790
32bit KDE            32&64bit KDE

really? i don't know much about this stuff, but isn't that a more modern/current graphics card? this is an old laptop. anyway, lspci | grep VGA

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RC410 [Radeon Xpress 200M]

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver
    Driver "ati"

I was wrong about the graphics board in your machine, but it may have given me another lead. Back on Monday
