<Answered>Am I Broadcasting?
« on: September 16, 2011, 09:43:52 PM »
Never used wireless and this is a real newbie question. My new computer has a wireless card. I haven't installed the antenna or set it up but I wonder if it could be broadcasting. I do have an Ethernet cable hooked up and when I open up Remove A connection all I see is ETH0.

I doubt you'll see any broadcast signal without the antenna installed. You won't see a wireless connection in PCC until you set it up by selecting "Set up a new network interface".

Ray2047 , your PC does not broadcast. It simply seeks. It seeks out a connection. As far as I know, there is no way to detect all the devices that are seeking.

What is your fear in installing the antenna? It simply detects local wifi connections that are available.

to broadcast a network from your wireless card you need to set the card to create a adhoc network, a point to point network wireless with other pc

if you haven't done this, you are not broadcasting any network

a card without the antenna, has as little coverage as 1 meter of distance, if your router is at 2 meters, you could not see it or get just 1 or 2 bars, sometimes with wpa2 tkip this won't be enough to establish connection, sometimes could be enough with wep

normal neighbors will not see you, they might see you if they assemble a very big directional antenna, something like a yagi uda antenna designed to work in the specific frequency you could be broadcasting, connected to the router but still, you need to create the adhoc network

if you lost your wifi card antenna, a old trick that sometimes works is connect one of these to the internal conductor in the exterior of the card

only the internal part should make connection, not the internal conductor and the external, this will give you a decent connection, 4 to 5 bars, we do this on class all the days because some guys decided to steal a bunch of antennas so we had to find a option and this one was simply enough, monday will bring a picture showing how we do it

Use WPA encryption and set a strong password.

on a adhoc network?  can't remember if that is possible, i think that only wep or no password, have to try that again some time

Right. He hasn't said whether he has a router or not. Don't know, either.

i understand that he connects directly with the ethernet cable to the modem and the wifi card has no where to be used, that is hwy no antena is present, maybe he has a router, as you say, we don't know

you can add a cheap router, something like a dlink router to connect to the wifi card and avoid one cable, the Ethernet cable, this is useful depending on distances and how clean you like to have your desktop

my old modem, i could ask the company to change it but they offered one that wasn't what i wanted so i opted for the modem to wireless router option, it works marvelously, when i don't want wifi radiating me, i unplug it and that's it, no broadcast and no radiation
