Sproggy, I have installed Evolution (which has a ton of Gnome dependencies) without issue in 4.8.  Also installed several QT4 libraries.  Are you sure this issues do not come up only when another DE is installed along side XFCE?

Geeqie runs great on Xfce without pulling in bunches of de dependencies.  Like Sproggy says, Thunar can show thumbnails.  I'm OK with some Gnome apps and applets in Xfce so long as they don't pull in bunches of Gnome dependencies, wouldn't even think of installing 'anything KDE' over my Xfce 4.8 install.  If you have KDE as your main base install with task-xfce to log on from KDM that's fine but 4.8 isn't even available as a task.

..................the alternative is to use one of the other releases and add in the apps you like , although I would not suggest using the new Phoenix and adding KDE apps - as this can cause (documented) configuration issues

If anything i have mentioned appeals to you then I have no problem in walking you through how to do this..
