I have a Toshiba Satellite L505-12Q laptop which uses the Realtek 8192SE Wireless Adapter. When I installed Phoenix 2011.07, the adapter was recognized but couldn't find any wireless network. I got it working by downloading and compiling the corresponding driver from the Realtek website.

Is there anything else I must do now? For example, uninstall the default driver or something like that? I searched but I cannot find any posts related to 8192se problems. In PCLinuxOS hardware database, the entry for this adapter says:

RTL8192se

PCLinuxOS Version: 2010
Desktop Environment: KDE 4.6
Other Comments:
Known problems or issues: None

Is it only me that had the problem? Did I do something wrong?

I don't have the adapter you mention, but wireless is often a hit and miss issue with Linux and certain chipsets I find. My Atheros based wireless for my EeePC is fine - no problems at all, but my Belkin dongle (rt2500usb) is terrible - it drops connections at will, fails to connect half the time at all, lousy signal strength.....
In my experience, the issues with my dongle have been independant of distro or kernel and whether I use the kernel included module, the previous module which had to be added manually or even the official driver from the manufacturer, it has been a pain. It works in that other OS (the popular one from Redmond) - I installed that some time back to simply test the dongle and it worked fine (Windows removed afterwards).

I guess the first thing is to give some more info - stuff like whether you are using some form of security on your wireless network (e.g WEP, WPA etc) and it might also be worth giving the info about your wireless from lsmod (to see if the driver you compiled is being used or if you are trying to use the one from the kernel).
Blackilsting the old driver is easy enough to do, but it is worth seeing what is happening first.
To temporarily remove the module - assuming it is being installed and perhaps causing confusion - simply become the "root" or "superuser" with the command su followed by your root password, then type in
rmmod nameofthe module
and hit enter.
We can go into the permanent blocking of the driver with blacklisting if needs be later.

By the way, it may be useful to have a look at the sticky about wireless issues which can be found at

In my Toshiba L555D laptop it works OK. What kernel are you running? If it's a pre 2.6.38.xx kernel, then you have to use the dkms driver package through Synaptic and install it. It's better to get the latest 2.6.38.xx kernel with the built-in driver because there are some issues with earlier kernels supporting this module, although I didn't have any problems. When you install the 2.6.38 kernel it will remove the dkms driver and built modules from previous kernels you already have.
Using Linux for over 18 years and still counting.

First of all thank you for your answers!

The kernel I'm using is 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs. My wireless network uses WPA2 encryption and I've set manual IP address, domain name, gateway and DNS servers. I had no disconnects or other problems since I installed the driver from Realtek. The only problem was that, without this driver, the wireless adapter was recognized by the OS but no wireless networks were showing (like scanning wasn't working).

The lsmod command returns these results:

I have installed this driver from Realtek:

http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=21&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true

This driver supports follwing RealTek PCIE Wireless LAN NICs:
RTL8188CE/RTL8192CE
RTL8191SE/RTL8192SE
RTL8192DE

My wireless adapter is recognized as 8191SEvB

At a quick glance this all looks reasonable, my work on the driver goes back some time, so I need a bit of relearning   ;D.    Next can you show content of the two following statements, normal user should be fine in konsole:

Code: [Select]
lspci -vnn
Code: [Select]
modinfo rtl8192se
In the following you need to be in a root konsole, the first statement updates your database the next nice lot of information about rtl8192:

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost gert]# updatedb
..
[root@localhost gert]# locate rtl8192

Sorry, normal user is not quite enough, can you repeat the lspci -vnn as root, (line with access denied tells me normal user is not enough).

Also note I added a locate statement in my previous post later.   :)

For some reason, I can't "code" these lines. Reply won't send if I insert "code"

I am not sure but perhaps you have hit a limit of number of characters allowed within code, but I can confirm that on my MiniMe system if I try to insert your content in code, the server closes me down. Somebody else may be able to tell us what this is, I have an idea.

Well the number of lines did surprise me, as I checked on this system I am using, turning my wireless connection on and doing a quick seach using locate.  I have another driver but I took a guess that yours would not be too far out in number of lines, but I was wrong. I have better summarise for myself because this little 'pushover' is laughing at me.   ;D

1.. Toshiba Satellite L505-12Q laptop
2.. Installed Phoenix 2011.07, amount of customisation=?
3.. 14:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8191SEvB Wireless LAN Controller [10ec:8172] (rev 10)
   Kernel driver in use: rtl8192se
   Kernel modules: r8192se_pci, rtl8192se
4.. Driver/Module from Realtek installed from outside Synaptic (because original die not scan/pickup)
5.. Not clear to me if "dkms" from synaptic has been installed, dkms-r8192SE

dkms package for r8192se driver
This package contains the r8192se driver for
Realtek RTL8191SE/RTL8192SE WiFi cards.

Please confirm by going to Synaptic and search on dkms-r8192se and that it is installed.

If that is the case and you have an "outside" driver I am getting very cautious and will change procedure. Since I am running MiniMe I will also change to Phoenix later if needed. I don't have the 2011.07 yet, I will download ISO now in preparation.  :)

I will check it when I get back home later this evening (I'm at work now)

You shouldn't have got into so much trouble for me! Thanks for all your efforts :)

I am sure than when you figure this out, you will provide some more info about what's going on because I really like to learn more, won't you?

My wireless adapter is recognized as 8191SEvB... but in Windows is showing as 8192SE (so was to a couple other distros). All this info above is about 8192SE...

You guessed right: dkms-r8192se is not installed...

dkms-r8192se is not required for kernel 2.6.38.x because it comes with the kernel. The firmware is missing on the Phoenix LiveCD.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.
