Seems to be a no go Andy.  Didn't see any errors when running the commands, but ATI Catalyst CC is still crashing every time i try to run it.  As texstar said, maybe it just doesn't support my on board graphics very well.

Also tried adding the lines to mms.cfg and the file wasn't there.  Busted out the old vim and created it with the lines you specified, but i'm not noticing a difference really.  Maybe slightly better, but still not really able to watch them in full screen.

If anyone else has an idea I'm open to it.  If not, guess youtube is out till i save for another video card.

Thanks everyone for your help so far!

OK.
  • Check that the option Enable Translucency is selected for your card
  • Try removing the line EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1 from /etc/adobe/mms.cfg (this improved things for me).
  • While YouTube is playing right click on the video select settings and try toggling hardware acceleration on or off (I find I get the best result with this enabled, others report they need it disabled).
  • From a terminal run the command amdcccle, what errors do you get?

Regards
Andy

I found a great deal on a video card (nvidia gt520 1gig ddr3 zotac for $27) today, so (assuming the card works) this isn't as big an issue any more.  When i get home I will try your suggestions.  If it works, I can return the card, if not, i'll just pop in this card and see how it goes with that.

Thanks again.

Alright.  Tried some of the suggestions that you gave me Andy, and I got some interesting results.  Still no playable youtube in any of the combos, but thought i'd post the results here.  If you have any more ideas for this particular set up i'll try them tomorrow (done screwing with this stuff tonight, need to get to bed), but I'm thinking at this point the easier solution is probably just to try this new video card and hope for the best.

*sorry about the formatting, was just jotting it down as i tried things*
---------------------------
Error from running amdcccle:
amdcccle: error while loading shared libraries: libQtGui.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

So off to synaptic i go.  I couldn't find libQtGui.so.4 but i did find something called libQtGui4.

Installed from synaptic and got the extra output was generated message, which was this:

While installing package libqtsvg4-4.7.3-1pclos2011:

/var/lib/rpm/filetriggers/ldconfig.script: line 2: ldconfig: command not found

The catalyst control center is now working however.

Enabled tear free mode as per texstars suggestion:

Had some kind of weird issue after hitting apply where catalyst control center seemed to be crashing, ran the command aticccle that andy gave me again to see what it said.

Said process was already running and gave me a number.  I figured this was the pid and killed it.
Went back to desktop and started AtiCcc again and it worked fine.  Not sure what this was about.

After confirming that youtube still wasn't playing smoothly, i went through the possible settings i could think of from the suggestions in this thread and played a video in you tube on full screen under each of them while monitoring top from a true console(not emulated).

Hardware flash acceleration off: (Still with both lines i added to mms.cfg and tear free on) cpu usage is around
40%

Hardware acceleration on: (same mms.cfg set)  Same CPU usage.  Maybe averaging about 2% lower.

After removing the linuxdecode something or other line from mms.cfg:

Hardware acceleration on:  around 45% cpu usage

Hardware acceleration off:  Around 38%

Ram usage was pretty much the same throughout all of these settings (around .8%).
-------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure if that means anything to you, but i figured i'd share in case it does, or if anyone stumbles across this thread in the future, maybe it will mean something to them.  Seemed extremely strange that cpu usage went down slightly in both cases when hardware acceleration was turned off, but then i'm no hardware expert, and especially not when it comes to graphics.

Got curious about the Catalyst control center weirdness and even though its past my bed time I couldn't resist investigating a little bit more.

Seems that all those settings i tried were actually without tear free mode enabled.

The Catalyst control center goes into that weird running but no where in sight on the desktop thing (and thus appears to be crashing when its run) every time I try to change a setting.  I hit apply, everythings cool, and then hit ok.  Everything seems hunky dory, but then try to open it again and its already running and i have to go into the command line and kill it.

Open it again after killing it, and tear free mode is not enabled.

Tried it several times and it repeats this behavior 100% of the time.

This leads me further down the path that the new video card is probably the best solution.  As I stated previously, I'm no hardware expert, but this is behaving suspiciously like driver issues I've had on windows machines in the past creating bizarre behavior.

Bit late, but maybe a workaround in FF:

/var/lib/rpm/filetriggers/ldconfig.script: line 2: ldconfig: command not found

That doesn't sound good. ldconfig is part of glibc and should be located in /sbin (this is where the ldconfig.script file is looking for it). It may be worth your while to reinstall glibc and possibly uClibc.

Try running amdcccle from a root terminal rather than as a normal user (this is the same as selecting it from the PC menu, but you get to see any messages output).

This leads me further down the path that the new video card is probably the best solution.

Unfortunately your probably right

I'd forgotten about this, well worth a try!

It would probably help if you updated your system. ldconfig was fixed a while back in a glibc update. Also there are updated ATi fglrx drivers in the repo since June. Not only that but there have been flash updates too.

This is a good add on but a lot of sites do not support it.

@Texstar - I thought I updated right after I installed, but I have been known to insert my grey matter into a brown orifice in the past.  Will double check this when I get home.

I think i'm going to save the flash replacement as a last resort if everything else, including the new video card, fails.  I do appreciate the suggestion of an alternative though.

@texstar You have a cranium inserted in cavern detector that is unbelievable.  I had done an apt-get update (thought it was like a yum -y update in Cent), but it turns out that after checking synaptic I hadn't actually done an update.

Didn't seem to make much of a difference as far as everything else is concerned though.  Youtube is still slow and Catalyst still does the weird running but crashing thing.

I think i'm done messing with the on board video.  Going to install the new video card and see how things go with that.

Thanks everyone for your warm welcome to the forum and all of your help.  I may be back here again shortly from the nvidia side of things instead of ati if things don't go as swimmingly as i hope.

Woot, new video card + 10 minutes or so tinkering with the drivers = Youtube and other streaming video sites work perfectly!
