Dell 1525 system crashes
« on: September 12, 2011, 04:27:32 PM »
It's been about 5 weeks now that I installed PCLOS 2011 KDE, that I have had almost a total System Crash/Failure every week which only a Re-Installed could fix, but only temporally.
Well it Crashed again, but time it left me a message of white letters on a black screen.
Some of the text looks Strange!? Here is most of it:

 ACPI: Sleep Button [SBTN]
 [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
 i915 0000:00:02.0:PCI INT A ->GSI 16 (level, low)->IRQ16
 [drm] set up 7M of stolen space
 input: PS/2 Mouse as {this had a file location too long, so I left this part out}
 input: Alps PS/2 glidePoint as {again, a file location which I left out}
 [drm] initialized overlay support
 fb: conflicting fb hw usage inteldrmfb vs VESA VGA-removing generic driver
 Console: switching to color dummy device 80x25
 Console: switching to color frame buffer device 160x50
 fb0: inteldrmfb Frame buffer device
 registered panic notifer
 acpi device:2f: registered as cooling device
 input: video Bus as /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYSBUS:00/PNP0A03:00/LNXVIDEO:00/input/input6
 ACPI: Video device[VID](multi-head:yes rom:no post:no)
 [Firmware Bug] Duplicate ACPI video bus devices for the same VGA controller, please try module parameter
     "video.allow_duplicates=1"if current driver doesn't work.
 [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for 0000:00:02 on minor0
 BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at fff9e000
 IP:[<c025b4a7>] ioread 32_rep+0x29/0x3a
 *pde = 005ef067 *pte = 00000000
 Oops: 0002 [#1] PREEMPT SMP

Then the last line showed this:
 Call Trace:
 [<f8ac68fa>] ? ata_sff_data_xfer32x044/0xd2 [lihata]

I am getting tired of this.
If anyone can help, I would be very happy

the system is telling you an hint: try to use that parameter.
Reboot the system, at grub screeen press F3 (option) and at the end of line parameters add
video.allow_duplicates=1

whenever you are able to boot your system, execute the following command
dmesg

and post the output using some third party host service like pastebin or other similar services.
Also report additional info, like a link to the HW specs of your PC, and possibly the content of the log file:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

I've (wrongly) assumed here you have installed the latest release which is pclinuxos-kde-2011-06.iso

from dmesg:
Quote
Linux version 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs (root@localhost.localdomain) (gcc version 4.4.1 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Oct 21 22:42:28 CDT 2010

The kernel 2.6.33.7 was shipped with pclinuxos-kde-2010-12

from Xorg.0.log:
Quote
X.Org X Server 1.10.3
Release Date: 2011-07-08
[    17.713] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
[    17.713] Build Operating System: Linux_2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs PCLinuxOS
[    17.713] Current Operating System: Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Oct 21 22:42:28 CDT 2010 i686

You are actually using an updated Xserver along with an outdated kernel, which is actually not advisable and definitely not tested.
Please, download the latest pclinuxos-kde-2011-06 and reinstall, you can find the ISO here:

http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/pclinuxos/live-cd/

I have never used postbin.com before.
I am now downloading pclinuxos-kde-2011-06.
I'll let you know how it works out.

I have installed KDE2011.6.
Now my Task Bar is screwed up.
I have:

 "Re-install the kde4-config package from the Synaptic Package Manager. Log out and back in again and the desktop will be reset to the original settings."
This did nothing!
I have reinstall kde4-config several times and logged out/in and rebooted several times, with no effect. ???
I have just spent the last 7 hours working on this without any gains :(
I am at the end of my rope with PCLOS.
Can anyone help?

It will reset your kde desktop back to pclinuxos default settings provided you aren't running as root. I've done it 100 times so I know it works.

Lets wipe all the kde settings out. Delete the .kde4 folder, log out and back in and it will reset to kde defaults. Note kde defaults are not the same as pclinuxos defaults.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Your reply is interesting.
I thought that pclinuxos - kde was the same as pclinuxos-gnome ???
I love gnome, but I thought that GNU/Linux was giving up on Gnome.
I am leaving *bunt* because they seem to be giving up on gnome.
If kde & gnome are different and if pclinuxos is going to continue gnome, then I will try a pclinuxos-gnome install.
You say to delete .kde4 then LOG OUT, or do you mean Re-Boot?
Meanwhile I will try your advise.
Thank you again.

After many tries, I was finally able to delete .kde4 folder.
Now that I have rebooted, I have almost no control over the desktop and Bottom Task Bar.
The clock is half visible and I am unable to correct the incorrect time.
My desktop Icons are very small and cannot be changed.
When I try to change something, an Error Window shows:
"Unable to authenticate/execute the action: 4, |"
Also, I can't Log Out, Restart or Shut Down.

Whenever I come across these kind of crashes or instabilty, I generally will blame the CD from which I installed.

Firstly, do a checksum of the downloaded ISO image to make sure there was no corruption to it.  Then when you burn it, do a slow burn (4x) and make sure to do a verification of the burnt CD.

If the above was already done, then my suspicion would go to the hardware itself.  Some parts of the hardware like RAM may be faulty or perhaps the harddisk.  These are just my guess, you will need to do more investigation on it.

As for the stability of the PCLinuxOS, I can vouch for its stability as I run it on a variety of different configurations.

This would indicate a permissions issue that would arise should you not use a claen /home directory to begin with,

Did you install over an existing /home with the same user name from a different distribution?

I would suggest creating a new fresh user  to check what may be at fault, also please repost a link to a fresh dmesg
