LXDE panel missing
« on: September 07, 2011, 12:13:25 PM »
I have two panel in a LXDE install, on below, the classic panel and one at the top where I put the access to programs I use more frequently.

I was trying to reduce the upload panel to center it and it went in a fast reduction, clicked "close" hoping to stop it (big mistake) and the panel disappeared. I thought I will make it again but the option to put it at the top is greyed out meaning (I think) that the place is occupied by a panel already.

Is my panel there?  It can be recovered or deleted?  What do you think I should do?

Look in your /home/<you>/.config/lxpanel/LXDE/panels. You should see 2 files there. One, panel is the default bottom panel. The other will be your top panel. At about lines 9 and 10 is where you will find your size is set. It sounds like you may have set the height to 0.

Yep,, "0" = it's there but no pixels = you can't see it.

Sounds like something I would do. LOL

When something goes all screwy like that, your .config directory is the first place to check. But if the panel just looks all screwy, lxdecc > Refresh Panel.

I also have an LXDE panel at the top of the screen. If you set it to minimise when not in use, but make the minimised size 4 pixels, you find that you don't bring up the panel when you're trying to click on the top of an open window. Now that's something that KDE doesn't have!
PCLinuxOS has no wealthy sponsors and can only survive with your donations! Don't wait it might be too late.

Davecs, tried your tip.

Set the below panel to be on the top edge and when I click the start button the menu appears in the down-left corner and is empty  ???

That's really strange.

Crow,
Moving the panel to the top has that affect. I do not know why. To get a properly working top panel, open /home/<you>/.config/lxpanel/LXDE/panels/panel and edit line #5 to change the position from bottom to top. Save as file name top. This will give you a functioning top panel.

Nope, that gave me a top panel but not functional.

Changed from:
Code: [Select]
Global {
    edge=bottom
    allign=center
    margin=0
    widthtype=percent

to:
Code: [Select]
Global {
    edge=top
    allign=center
    margin=0
    widthtype=percent

Did you save the file name as top as advised?  I know you probably did, just making sure.  I could have missed it, feather-brained as I am ....  ;)

Check the files permissions. They should match the bottom panel file.

I get a fully functional top panel here.

An alternate method would be to create a blank file named top or toppanel, copy and paste the contents of the file panel into it and then change line #5 to top.

I have the same problem here but your solution didn't help, Neal.
the menu still appears empty, no matter what name it has.
Right now I adder left panel with menu so that it would work, but this doesn't suit me, because menu covers my launchers when showing.
Any ideas will be appreciated
