Is a new install needed for KDE 2011
« on: September 07, 2011, 12:54:52 AM »
Hi all

Just wondering whether an update via synaptic is sufficient or do I need to do a fresh install of the kde 2011 iso..

Thanks

If you have kept your system updated, you are using 2011. However, if you have not been keeping current with applying updates frequently, you may need to do a new install. Updates should have been applied every week but no less than 30 days apart to remain current.

Thanks for the prompt response.  I have to confess that I haven't kept the laptop up to date since I bought a new monitor.  Guess I'll save my /home, back up and reinstall.

Thanks again.

If you started with a 2009, or older, version do a new install.
If you started with a before 2011.6 version, search this forum for aptupgrade and follow the instructions.
If you did a consequent update every month (including aptupgrade) till now, there is no need for a new install.

Would have been up to date until about June 2011 when I bought the monitor.  Just to be sure I'll do the new install.  Don't want any issues.

Thanks

June 2011
reload in synaptic,
check for aptupgrade, if needed perform the aptupgrade (install, close synaptic and, in root terminal, type aptupgrade, enter. aptupgrade is also somewhere in the menu but removed after executing)
If aptupgrade is already performed it tells you so and quits.
reload in synaptic again, upgrade the system and you're done.

Looks like you're 60 to 90 days late on updates?  That could be a problematic update to current status.

This might be helpful in the future:

Enable Automatic Updates:
Open the Configure your Computer (PCLinuxOS Control Center)
Click on System
Click on Manage System Services
Check APT to start at boot
Click on Start
Click OK

thanks for the responses.  Will try the aptupgrade method.

Yes I have the auto upgrade method enabled on the desktop, but for some reason it didn't work on the laptop.

Thanks again

As far behind in upgrades as you are, the better choice is a new install. aptupgrade upgrades to newest apt, rpm and Synaptic, but it does not prevent issues caused by an extended period of time between upgrades.

@Neal
Is a new install 2011.6 not about the same as an upgraded/dated June ??
Just my curiosity...

If the system has been kept up to date, an updated 2010 is 2011. However, if a system has not been updated between June and September, it is too far out of date to be safely upgraded. In such cases, a reinstall is the better option.
