Toshiba Wi-Fi
« on: September 06, 2011, 07:24:59 AM »
I am in a sea of trouble.
I already have PCLinux on my PC and decided to install it on my wife's laptop also.
The installation went perfectly and everything works fine with one exception....the wi-fi.
It connects to our network no problem and it stays connected.
However if you try to use it , it works at full speed for a few moments, then slows down, then grinds to a halt.
Leave it be for a minute and the scenario repeats, and again, and again.
I tried connecting to Speedtest.net, and you can watch it start the test at full speed, and then slow down to a full stop by the end of the test.
She who must be obeyed is not overly amused by this, and I need help......badly.
The laptop is a Toshiba L500-1XL.
It's wi-fi adaptor identifies itself as Realtek RTL8191SEvB
The OS is PCL 2011.6 and the desktop is KDE latest version, all updates done ( using ethernet link)
My network wi-fi has been checked out and is working fine.
Any help would be most gratefully received.

First course of action. Make sure the installed kernel is the latest one.

open the terminal, type "uname -r" and post your result.

I am not sure what kernel is included in the installation image you used and which one is the latest on the repositories. Check, if they dont match, update and check if the problem is still there.

Also post results of these two commands:

lsusb

lspci

Try the kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs - works much better for me.

As suggested I have just upgraded the kernel to 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs, but sadly the problem remains.

Went into Control Centre and removed the connection.
Created a new one.
Problem still exists.

Install an earlier kernel, one of the .37 series and try again.

This kind of a problem is easily solved by using a different kernel or using a different driver.

If the older kernel still have the same problem then a solution could be looking into using a different driver.

This should use the same driver that is listed in this thread:

Tried to create network...only adaptor showing is NDISWRAPPER
Back to square one I am afraid.

You have already installed the dkms-r8192se and rtl8192se-firmware ?
I found there are 4 different rtl8192xxxx already in the latest kernel.
So maybe choose to add (if not installed) or fully remove (if already installed) dkms-r8192se and rtl8192se-firmware.

@DeBaas
I didnt install rtl8192se-firmware. I guess it comes with the PCL installation.
I have removed the "37" kernel and installed 2.6.38.8-pclos3
In Synaptic, there is dkms-r8192se but not installed.
If I click to install, Synaptic wants to uninstall kernel 2.6.38.8 which would I guess leave no kernal in the machine.
Things are bad but that sounds a lot worse. :-\

Try:
Install the .37 kernel (the one that does not find the WiFi driver) again, reboot and install the  dkms-r8192se and rtl8192se-firmware packages. (the .38 kernel can always be reinstalled if necessary).
Try again (fingers crossed)

thanks the driver is loaded,

r8192se_pci

now post the output of:
dmesg | grep firm

and let's see if we can see the firmware loading, or if there's an issue with it.
