Best PCLinuxOS for my Hardware
« on: September 05, 2011, 03:02:29 PM »
Hi guys i am using a Acer Aspire 5315-2142, with Celeron 540, Intel GMA x3100, 1GB DDR2, 120 HD and i ask you what version of PCLinuxOS should i use... I was using Arch linux with gnome ,since gnome 2.32 and tried to use gnome 3 but hated, so tried a few distros and watched a review of PCLinuxOS and will give it a try, btw, never used any other DE than gnome, and don't know how the KDE or the LXDE of PCLinuxOS are...

There is a 'task-gnome' in the repo, which will install the Gnome DE alongside whatever is the default for your install.  Then you choose your DE at login.  Sorry, don't know if it's Gnome 2 or Gnome 3...

But if you're going to switch to Gnome anyway, I'd advise to install the lightest you could - LXDE, probably.

Only you can really say which so I would recommend that you try them all but my guess would be either XFCE or LXDE.

hello and welcome to the forum!

that hardware is similar to my netbook

i run on it kde4

about the change form gnome to kde, yes, if you know only kde, the difference can be big but as you know, you can configure a desktop in many ways so you can make kde4 behave like gnome2

if kde is not for you, lxde or xfce could be what you want

have in mind that kde is the heaviest desktop existing and you can run it well, anything under it will be lighter

about gnome 2, it seems that we are going to have it for a few more months untill the dust settles on gnome 3 and the migration is less painful

remember that kde3 to kde4 migration was a pita too, after some time you find what you want or learn how to modify it to work the way you need it

+1
Xfce or LXDE would be good on that machine.  Task-Xfce is not the latest Xfce, you would have to install latest Pheonix or Phinx.  Melodie's "OpenBox Bonsai" or Linuxera's E17 "Summer Fairy" are also excellent.
