firefox.bin 100% cpu usage?
« on: September 02, 2011, 11:49:35 AM »
I've noticed for the last couple of updates on firefox that occasionally firefox.bin is showing 100% cpu usage on both cores.  The screen greys out while it's doing it.  Back several versions ago, it was doing the same thing. Seems like they had it fixed, but it's doing it again.  Is anyone else having this problem with the latest versions of firefoc?

Can't duplicate here - CPU seems about the same as FF5 but memory has decreased a little.

Nothing like that happening here. Have you tried disabling all your extensions, plugins, etc? Just a thought...

Are you running Compiz, or KWin effects?

I experience the same thing. FF freezes and doesn't respond for a while. Sometimes the whole screen freezes. CPU usage as it 100%. I have 6.0.2 and I don't recall this happening in earlier versions, only after the last update.

Turning off all add-ons is not a solution, because I need them, otherwise I wouldn't have them installed.

I don't run any "firework" effects for KDE.

It's sometimes worth disabling them all and adding them back one at a time so you can discount one or more as being the cause - or finding the culprit........

I don't think it was being offered as a "solution".  It is merely a way of narrowing down if the problem is with FF itself, or is a problem with one or more add-ons.

If the problem goes away after disabling add-ons then you add them back one-by-one to determine which one is causing the problem.

I suspect that this is a regression of Firefox's possibly caused by an addon, it happens from time to time, check the support pages for your installed addons, or as mentioned disable them all , and see if this issue persists  then add one in at a time.

also check with an application like htop the exact process name  within firefox that is causing the 100% usage

You don't know unless you try .......  it might be the solution ......  and it might be that turning off one of them is the solution.

I am trying to find out if it's not one of them, but I won't like the idea of disabling, say NoScript, because FF is getting worse with each recent upgrade.

Surely it is not an inconvenience to temporarily disable it and re-enable it after some testing?

I just do not understand .....   ???

That's what I am doing. But if it is one of them, then I'd have to turn it off permanently and that would be an inconvenience, especially if it would be one of those I have installed for higher security reasons.

PS. Well, it's not add-ons. All are disabled and the FF froze again :( firefox-bin eats 100% or 101% of CPU.

This usually happens when I access bookmarks. Either open the list, or click an icon on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

I'll try to run it clean and see if it happens again.

tvbtiger,

Open a konsole/terminal and type htop (if this is not found install it via a synaptic in the usual way ie after making sure you are fully up to date with the install)

then start another terminal and launch firefox - this should act asa adebugging console and show any errors/warnings that may appear

once you have an instance of htop running pin it so that you can see the furst few app names and teh re details  while running a ffox session, and see which of the processes is grabbing the processor(s)

lastly which version of PCLinuxOS is it you have installed ?

htop shows that /usr/lib/firefox-6.0.2/firefox-bin takes 100% CPU (two lines, as I have dual-core).

The console said:

Code: [Select]
$ firefox
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to retrieve property `GtkTreeView::odd-row-color' of type `GdkColor' from rc file value "((GString*) 0xb1c68530)" of type `GString'
[NoScript] Adding category

My system is up to date. I don't remember which PCLInuxOS I installed, as it was some time ago. Any way to check it and does it matter if the system is up to date?
