OK, renaming the KDE directory worked. Should I start copying in files from the old KDE directory one at a time and testing? Any suggestions which ones in what order?
One at a time would take inordinately long. I'd start by restoring
~/.kde4/Autostart and
~/.kde4/share/apps and if that doesn't break the system I'd restore the parts of
~/.kde4/share/config that I really don't want to reconfigure. Logging out and in again after every single file isn't really practical (but restoring bunches of ten files before testing might be).
You don't have to restore the links
cache-localhost, socket-localhost or
tmp-localhost as they are automatically recreated.
