PCmanFM
« on: August 31, 2011, 11:43:53 PM »
I know this is going to sound stupid but.......how do I do a search using PCmanFM? I can't find a search box or anything in the menu bar. I tried to type things in to the navigation bar like in Safari but PCmanFM called "No Joy" on me. Stupid terminal is starting to look better and better. Thanks for the help!

It seems that the search function and the tree view have been removed from the pclos  lxde version (although they are present in other DE and other distros)
You can either install a separate file search tool or you can check the mod version of pcmanfm (I know the forum admins will not like this)

If you decide to install it, you will not get support for it in this forum

There is a way which the mods like a lot.  Put in a package request in the package request forum once you have read the rules.  ;)

Ummmm.....what? I do not mean for this to sound judgmental, things can be taken the wrong way when reading a forum post and you cant see the face of the person posting but..........why would they(people in charge of distro) put a crippled file manager in as the primary file manager? I say this because PCmanFM is the one that loads in the bottom tray at start, so as a new user, I would take it as this is the file manager they want me to use. ???

konaexpress,
Open Synaptic and do a full upgrade. When that has finished, click Settings > Repositories > click on your chosen repo > add testing to the Section(s) line -- like so: main updates nonfree kde4 games testing > click OK > Reload > mark PCManFM for upgrade > search for and marrk for install XSearch > click Apply and again Apply.

XSearch is a PCLinuxOS app. With it you can search your /home/<you> for files and open them in your default app. The menu entry reads "Find and Open Files."

edit: Don't forget to remove testing from your Section(s)!

Misinformation! ::) ::) ::) We did not "put a crippled file manager in as the primary file manager." The default file manager for LXDE, PCManFM was installed/upgraded to its latest git revision at the time of the creation of PCLinuxOS-LXDE-2011.06. If it was crippled, do not lay it on us! We do not develop the main (official lxde.org) LXDE applications. If you've got a problem with how it is coded, lxde.org is the place.

In the latest version in testing tree view is back.

I can recommend getting a thorough understanding of how and from what RPMs are built. Also, knowledge of whether the app in question is from outside (like the lxde dev team) or is an "in-house" application would be useful.

Whoowee! I am not blaming you, I'm just trying to understand what the other guy said. And as a new user, I hope you will forgive me for not understanding what is your app and what is a 3rd party app.  I am not trying to disparage PCLOS or its management team. I am just trying to rap my head around it and understand how it all works, thats all.

As far as I am concerned this topic is over with, I will go and figure something out. I'm good.

Sorry. Didn't mean to come across as harsh. hasmak is new here, too. My advise to learn about how things are done is good, though. I think. There's a page in our knowledge base (wiki) on PCLinuxOS specific apps, if you're interested.
