LXDE and compiz
« on: August 31, 2011, 06:32:48 PM »
I've been running PCLOS 2010 KDE with compiz for about 6 months.  I've heard
good things about LXDE, and I thought I'd try it out this afternoon.
I know compiz works fine with my hardware.

When I was running KDE, I used Synaptic to install the task-lxde package.
I tried going to PCC->Boot->Set up display manager, but I only had choices
for KDE and XDM.  I restarted the display manager, but I still did not get a
choice for LXDE.  How can I get a choice between KDE and LXDE when I boot up?

So I tried downloading PCLOS 2011 LXDE and burned a LiveCD.  I booted up on it,
and LXDE came up fine.  But once again, I couldn't figure out how to get the
compiz effects (like the rotating cube) to work with LXDE.  What does one have
to do get compiz to work with LXDE?

Feeling stupid, but not too proud to ask for help....

Walt.

Check in Session at the login screen. LXDE will be an option there. PCC->Boot->Set up display manager is where you choose your login manager, KDM, GDM or XDM (KDE Display Manager, Gnome Display Manager and X Display Manager).

LXDE does not come with compiz installed. Install task-3d. Then PCC > Hardware > Configure graphics > Configure 3D Desktop effects.

Thanks to the reply, on my 2010 KDE desktop, I learned how to edit the session manager and start up
LXDE instead of KDE.  Cool.  But I still don't know how to get compiz effects to work with LXDE.
compiz works fine with KDE, so I know I have all the software installed and my hardware is OK.
What do I need to enable with LXDE to get compiz effects (like the cube in particular) to work?

Install task-3d. Then PCC > Hardware > Configure graphics > Configure 3D Desktop effects.

Isn't this what you are after?

task-3d and configure 3d effects are already selected; compiz does work with KDE.

I think (but I could easily be wrong) that it has something to do without LXDE preferences,
not PCC preferences.

If I click on the "Configure your LXDesktop" icon to bring up the LXDE control center,
then click on "System Tab" -> "Session Settings" -> "Advanced Options" ->
"Windows Manager" is set to "openbox-lxde".

There's a big warning that says "Do not touch this unless you know exactly what you
are doing".

I think perhaps "Windows Manager" needs to be changed to something to do with
compiz, but I do not know exactly what I'm doing, and I'm asking for help.

Ah - I can see clearly now.  Can't help you so ... running IceWM and compiz is not an option on this oldtimer ...

I'm sure help is on it's way.

Yes, in Session Settings, the window manager" is set to "openbox-lxde." No, switching to another is unlikely alter anything, but you can try it, if you know what you're doing. Any road, which window manager is in use doesn't have much to do with effects. A window manager is just a 'back-end,' unless you are using it as a DE.

Personally, I don't use 3D. It just isn't appealing to me. I'll see if I can configure it here and get back to you.

I installed task-3d, enabled 3d desktop effects in PCC and rebooted. On getting back to my desktop, I typed <Ctrl> + <Alt> keys and held them while I left clicked and held on the desktop. Then I dragged and the cube was active.
You may want to check your settings in Menu > More Applications > Configuration > CompizConfig Settings.

What you described does create a square, but is not the rotating cube effect when you change
desktops,  and the rotating cube is what I'm looking for.

installing task-3d does not install compiz or ccsm, they definately have to be installed separately.
I googled several articles implying that compiz does work with LXDE, but I can't find any that
really tell you how to do it....

It does indeed work. There's an article here, but it doesn't go into configuration details. But I don't believe it does cube rotation when changing desktops. I'll have to look at that old PIII to see if it does and what the settings are.

Excuse me! When I say the rotating cube was there, that is exactly what I mean! It was a cube, not a square! I rotated the danged cube exactly as I said.
Please do not tell me I had a square. I do know the difference.

I'm only reporting what happened to me on a new partition and a fresh install of LXDE 2001 on that partition,
on hardware that does give the rotating cube under KDE: I do not get a cube exactly following the instructions,
I get a square.  I do have 6 desktops.  I (also) know the difference between a square and cube.  I honestly did
not mean to offend anyone, I greatly appreciate everyone's help.  If I didn't need help, I wouldn't be here.

I'm certain that after I installed LXDE from scratch, I started Synaptic and installed task-3ddesktop.  I'm 99.99%
certain than when I did that, compiz was not installed, so I didn't have a CompizConfig option until I installed
compiz separately.

I do not know why are 2 systems behave differently....

I have no idea why you don't get the cube. It works fine here.
Hmm...... maybe this thread on the LXDE forums will help ---
