No Video On Samsung NC-20
« on: August 27, 2011, 10:48:15 PM »
Havent used this laptop in over a month, did the latest updates, rebooted to a flashing blue, pink screen. Tried vesa driver, safeboot to no avail. It has a via chrome video chipset. It works fine in Windows, so I know there is nothing mechanically wrong. Would appreciate any solutions,as there have been some postings there have been conflicts between the latest xorg and this chipset

When you boot up, you get the GRUB menu I guess (else you can't boot Windows I think)...

But then, you select PCLinuxOS
=> do you get the Plymouth Splash screen (metal progress bar or PCLinuxOS blue dobie appearing [older])?

Do you get that blue / pink flashing screen when the Xorg screen server starts?
=> meaning, after PCLinuxOS is loaded, and it is preparing to show you the login prompt, at that moment....

Thanks for the information  ;)

All the interesting stuff happens after the menu screen, when PCLOS should start to load I go black, so I cannot get any messages prompting me what is going on. So I am really in the dark. All was good before this update.

Can you remember what 'remarkable' updates happened?
=> xorg, kde, kernel, ......................

When did you install that system? What Desktop Environment?

I see you hadn't booted for more than a month, but when was the last time you updated that box? Maybe you need to update your repository first... several posts about the transition from 2010 to 2011 and the need for updating the sources.list.

Updated this machine at least once a week, until I took about a month off, then did the last update with a current repo. I just tried another repo without any more upgrades.
The via nano chipset happens to be a pain in the $ss for linux.

Well, it was a long shot but worth checking, I guess. I suspect that in your situation, not even being able to boot into safemode, I would break out the latest LiveCD and see what I could find out. If the LiveCD boots okay, and all else fails, I'd back up the data, then nuke 'n' pave... but then I'm lazy that way.

I feel your pain, I have some PITA hardware myself.

I just tried the 64 bit KDE with same results, then the latest 32 kde same results. My guess now is the newest kernel, or the xorg. I will try a remaster with older kernel and see if that helps, but the new xorg is something I will eventuall have to figure out.

Lust installed PCLOS KDE 2010.12 and I an at a desktop with kernel .33.7 which is the default. I will be trying a different kernel, probably the latest, to see if that is the culprit but I suspect it is the xorg. I will report my findings. I appreciate the help I am getting

I installed KDE 2010.10 for the purpose of giving me the .37 kernel and old xorg  to allow me to boot into dektop. Then added new repo. Allowed 800mg of updates, rebooted twice with no problems. Just updated kernel to .38.8 bfs and everything seems fine. Before I mark this solved, I want to run this Samsung NC-20 a day or so. I appreciate the quick update on the via-chrome driver.
