And the actual partition?
I'm sorry I just can't tell from looking a the cylinder numbers which one is the 45.8Gb partition.

/dev/sdb8 looks about right. How did you get the information posted without knowing what partition to look at?

Some times the GUI is your friend. :) I can see the drive in Dolphin. I knew the approximate size and got the exact size in Dophin. Opening it in Dolphin confirmed it was root. Opening boot gave me the Boot directory. Of course that was only after trying to get the info using 'uname'. Did use 'uname -a' for the PATA drive.

The quick way to boot that partition is to copy the first stanza of your PATA installation and then paste it back directly under the first, so you have two identical stanzas. In the new second stanza edit it so that the root= line reads root=/dev/sdb8 and the title reads PCLOS - SATA. Save the file and reboot. At the boot menu, select the PCLOS - SATA option then press the Enter key. You should boot into the SATA installation, but you will be using the kernel and initrd from the PATA drive.

This may not work if there is too much difference between the contents of the two initrd images. If that is the case you will have to copy the initrd image from the SATA drive, and save it in the PATA /boot directory with -sata added to the full name, then change the initrd line of the second menu.lst stanza again, to point to the copied initrd image by name.

Because the MB of the current computer is different from the original in which the SATA drive was in, even this may not work, in which case you would need to create an entirely new initrd image with the mkinitrd application, to get all the proper modules loaded. Obviously this is more involved, so for now try the first suggestion, and if it doesn't work, the second suggestion.

Post your results.

Even more complicated then you think. If I leave the SATA drive in any computer too long that computer freezes then will no longer even post until I disconnect the SATA drive for a while and let it set. I know sounds weird but have confirmed on two computers. Right now the SATA is in its resting disconnected phase. Hopefully later today I will be able to post and boot with it installed.

Thanks so far for all the help. Will be back if I can hopefully get the SATA to work a little longer.

Update: The length of time I can run the SATA drive before it locks the computer and stops it from posting has gotten so short I may just abandon trying to make a remaster. Thank you though for all your help.

It looks like it may be just the SATA hard drive that is failing, and possibly your main computer could still be working if it had a different hard drive installed. Have you tried that?

Yes, will try but from previous experience though it makes no sense it will be at least six hours before it will post. Resetting CMOS or using a different CMOS battery doesn't help.

Have you tried a total dismantling of the main computer, cleaning each and every part, and reinstalling the CPU with new thermal compound. I ask because my backup unit was given to me as a non running brick, without a hard drive, from which I might be able to scrounge a few usable parts before trashing the left-overs. I dismantled it, cleaned everything, reassembled it, and installed two PATA drives I had left over from an older build of my main compute.  It booted and ran normally. I then replaced the 768 MB RAM it came with, with two 1 GB sticks, also left over from a previous build of the main computer. I still use that unit whenever I do scheduled maintenance on the main unit, which, for me, means another complete tear down for cleaning and individual parts checking.

It's your time, and your money, involved here, so the decision is yours, but I've resurrected many "thought to be dead" computers in this manner, with some parts replacement, occasionally, from good parts removed from "truly dead" units.

The main computer gets a different PSU tomorrow. The memory has been pulled and reseated a couple of times but only one stick. Don't have spare memory though because all the parts in my junk cabinet are from older salvaged computers. I also think I have another CPU that will fit this board.
